3rdGen Stock Wheel performance with competition tires

I plan to do some track events this year. I have two options. 3rdGen

1) 16x8 stock wheels with Competition Tires.
2) 17x8.5/17x10 with 235frt/275rear Ultra High Performance Tires.

In option 2, the rims are not light weight and the rim/tire combo is much heavier than the stock setup. But then I have a lot more rubber to the ground.

Which will perform better?

Now lets put Competition Tires on the heavier wheels? What happens then?

In other words, is more rubber always better regardless of weight?

If these were real race cars then our sponsors would give us the huge wheels that weigh nothing. But that’s not the case, so we have to be creative. Opinions?

I'd personally go with the competition tires on stock rims. The stock rims are light and strong. Your suspension will react quicker as you will have less unsprung weight. Plus the competition tires will REALLY help out. You will also lose some of your acceleration with 17" rims.

I offer my opinion....

Definately option #2. You are always going to be better off with Competition tires. I would suggest in the interest of the tires lasting a bit longer that you get a set of Kumho Victoracer 245/45/16 (bit bigger) and get them 6/32 and heat cycled.

As for option #2, I have run 17x10 all the way around quite a bit, with competition tires, and I actually like the stock wheels on the car a little better. The car turns in much easier (preferance) and is actually faster in the straights with the smaller wheels. I was convinced by my step-father (pro racer) to go this route. You would be better off if for anything because of weight and grip.

BTW I have some Kumho race tires for sale (they are new) and have both sizes you may be looking for
