17x9 tire size

whats the narrowest and widest tire i can fit on to a 17x9 rim, the wheels are on a fc, i have at the moment 255/40/17 at the back, need to get some for the front. will 225s fit? or is the rim too wide for it?

245/40-17 would be the narrowest tire size I'd go with 9 wides...

That's a pretty big stretch. Most tire manfs recommend a max 8" wide wheel for a low profile 215.

I wouldn't go narrower than 225/45, with 245/40 being better. Why not go 255/40 up front as well? Will that not fit on an FC?
