17x8 / 17x9 Advans on an FC

i have a set of Advans i want on my FC. I did some research and found some stuff on FC3Spro.com and they said the max offset is +35 on the front (for a 17x8) and +40 on the rear (17x9) both with a 255 tire. http://fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/RT/rims.htm
the problem is i dont know alot about wheels and the numbers they come with.
so do i need a 10mm spacer up front and 2mm (probably 5mm right?) on the back?
also what is 255? sometimes i see 3 numbers, i asume one is width and anouther is hight, but the 3rd?
im getting so sick of all this, someone just tell me what i need to buy so i can put it all behind me!

The rears should fit fine 17x9 +38 with 255/40/17. the fronts MIGHT clear with a 10mm spacer, but a 225/45/17 is about as wide as you can go in the front. I don't think a 255 in the front will fit at all.
