14" Desirable tire size

Okay so ive searched around the FAQ's stickies and the fitment writeup.. It doesnt provide info im looking for so far.

1987 w/ 14'' phone dial rims. Suspension mods- tokico illumina 5-ways w/ tein s. type springs. I'd say the drop is somewhere near 1''?
Currently the tires on it are rediculously small, smaller than stock. I need new tires, cant really afford new rims.
I was looking @ Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position tires.

What I need to know is... what size tires will look right and drive desirably inside my wheel wells on the size rims i have. I dont get snow in Louisiana so im all about the grippiest summer tires I can find. But im stumped as to whats going to be good whether its what tirerack says i should get (185/70/14) or what seems nice like 195/60/14, or what would be nice like 205/60/14, im just looking for an opinion....

With the stock phone dial rims, you are pretty much stuck with 185/70s. You could go a little smaller diameter than stock and run the 195/65s. 205/60 is starting to get too big for the wheel width.

It's an inch smaller than stock in diameter. Check out Falken and Toyo tires too (which Tire Rack doesn't carry).

Go to Edge Racing or Vulcan Tire and look for some other tires.

195/65-14 are available...Falken 512s which are a decent tire, not in the ultra-performance realm but OK tires

195/60-14 will bring you more ultra-performance options but won't exactly be as tall as the OE 185/70-14s

tire size

Hello,

I have been running 215 60 14 tires for over 200K miles on my 1986 rx7

Phone dial rims

I have suspension techniques lowering springs on it. Down 1.25" or so.

They are the best size for that size rim. Period. I ran 205's up front once but they dropped the car too low where I would hit speed bumps when I went over them wrong.

Go to americas tire and use the tire calculator. 185 70 14 is stock. You'll see that 215 60 14's are the best match height wise. Width wise the 215's are pretty close to the strut on the front but I've run around 5 to 6 different makes of 215's and they all clear and never rub.

right now it's 215 60 14's up front and 225 60 14's in the rear. Gives it just a slight rake. 225's will not fit up front. Ever. . . . you have to use a 30mm offset rims to use 225's up front. They will fit in the rear with a 35 mm offset. stock is 40 mm

235's on up start to get to wide for me and have rubbing problems depending on how lowered you are.

I am changing finally after my rebuild and would like to run 15 inch rims. But to keep the same height you need 215 55 15 tires. And only one tire maker supplies them. Kumho ecsta 711 . . But if they discontinue them or if you blow one. Getting one is hard. And 205's are still to short.

so I am going with 225 50 15's with a 35 mm offest rim. Maybe use 3 to 5 mm spacer up front. That should give me width without rubbing. Maybe someone can chime in to support this?

okay this is interesting. 225's in the back on phone dials?! do you have pics of your car anywhere? this i would really like to see, because if you can stuff em and you dont have tire flex issues in handling ill put em on. by what your saying im thinking about going 215/60's all around.
"205/60 is starting to get too big for the wheel width." as stated above.. thats why i would like to see a pic of your car.
i will be putting in tein springs and tokico illuminas within the month, so i will have about an inch drop. so i should definantly stick with /60 and not the stock /70? im having a gripe with that pertaining to high speeds, when im going 120 on the odo, my car is probably only going 105-110... thats the big reason i want /70 back.. will 215/70's look right and not rub? filling the wheel well as up as much as possible would be cool.
if that all made sense (im about to head out to work and im still drunk) please give me your opinion. i WILL actually be using the words i see in this thread to make my tire choice thx
