dead safc?

I bought a used safc II from a friend but after hooking it up the safc buttons glow orange but the screen never comes on. If i start the car, it dies as if the afm is not plugged in. when i disconnect the afm wires from the safc and run the wire back to the ecu the car runs righht. Car is s NA S4. Is this a dead safc?

Ok I found out that the black wire is the ground for the buttons and the brown is for the screen. I wired it where the brown was closed to the engine as the manual says but no display. I believe there is a problem with the brown wire causing the screen to not be grounded.
