Poll: whats the South Forums Opinion on V8 swaps?
After all this IS the south.... we stick V8s in everything one will fit in. I don't know where those guys were from that made that chainsaw with a v8 though.

It is the SOUL of where hot rodding came from; make your car different and/or faster.
If you have not driven one, then you do not have the right to say it is not as fun as a rotory. It is fun but in a different way.
Some people are only "rotory freaks", and other all "speed freaks".
Which category do you place yourself in, the narrow minded one or expanded minded one?

To each their own, whatever makes you happy. There are hundreds of piston powered cars but there is only one rotary powered. I admire alot of different rides, from muscle cars to exotics but the only one that really get's me totally excited is the rotary. I'm loco about the spinning triangle thing but then again that is only my humble opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

Especially the one about being "GAY". How can a V8 be gay?
Maybe SingleTurboRx7 has V8 envy, and definitely has other issues.
I was not the first to vote or the first to say it is good for a dayly driver.
That is the only positive answer. It is fun to drive. Power is what makes it fun, not the type of engine. It definitely is more reliable.
I am a speed freak and like any good looking, handling , and fast car.
The best sounding engine I ever owned was a 1290CC Alfa Romeo twin overhead cam with direct bucket valve actuation, steel twin roller cam chains with twin WEBER 40DCOEs, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold.

It's not exactly apples to apples, though, is it - most people that talk about v8s being more reliable are dropping new crate motors, low miles vette and camaro engines, or rebuilt with all new parts engines into their car, and comparing the reliability to a 15-20 year old rotary. Is it really any wonder that the v8's are more reliable?
I just find it hard to believe, since my 13b was 2,000 miles shy of 200,000 when it finally lost a coolant seal, and my Uncle's 350v8 Suburban didn't make it 50,000.
My buddy's '68 305 Camaro hasn't run since I've known him.
I'm with EJ, it's your car and you can do what you want with it - but stuffing a v8 into an Rx7, to me, is giving up. All it really says is "I know v8's, I don't understand rotaries and I'm not interested in learning enough to make it reliable."
Do what you want, but if you hadn't come out so adamantly for v8 RX7's, noone would have known you had one. There's no need to attack SingleTurboRX7 because of some perceived slight. He doesn't envy your v8 RX7 anyway, the last 4 times I've seen him, he's been driving a late model Porsche.
Oh, but wait, that's not a v8 either.

I get hacked just reading about a chevy going into a '67 - '69 Pontiac Firebird, so tossing a V8 into an RX-7 is just outright heresy. While it works for the FC and FD cars regarding weight distribution and handling, especially with the aluminum LS1's and LS6's, the 1stgen cars, the SA's and FB's, might as well have a deer strapped to the hood. It kills the balance and the very nature of the car in all of those respects.
A V8 FC took top honors in last year's GRM $2006 Challenge. Didn't the 944 or some variant come with a V8? Same style car, no wonder the balance wasn't affected...

I already own 2 cars with V8s in them, I dont need another.
I had a 450+hp corvette not to long ago, and my Rx7 could woop my vettes ***
I am not trying to be an ******* about the its gay comment, but thats what I hear at the Rx7 meets from most of you guys that show up, that why I put it on there.
as for that $2006 challenge, half those guys are liing about what they spent (or they stole a bunch of parts) buy an Rx7 for $500, then drop $1700 and it runs 10s in the 1/4? I know there are alot of good hot rod tricks out there, but this is a little far fetched.

Oh, and like I said - I don't think it's wrong, I just think it's admitting that you've given up because you don't feel like taking the time to learn and do it right. When there're 13b's out there putting down 600hp time and again, and 400hp all day long, I don't see the need to swap a whole different drivetrain into it. The fact is, if you're blowing engines, then you're doing something wrong.

"Cheaper Alternative" - I spent $12,500 on my swap, it can be done cheaper but I don't cut corners.
"Daily Driver" - It is a great daily driver with freezing cold a/c. It's a 10 sec car with only a cam and headers.
"Rev" - It's about the same, I spin to 7200 and the power is still climbing.
I don't understand why people say "It's giving up?" I had my fun with the rotaty and moved on,but I loved the car and just couldn't part with it. I knew nothing about v8s when I did my swap and have never owned a v8 before. When I did my swap no one had done a LS6 yet and it is quite a bit different from a LS1 in motor swap terms. I had to figure **** out on my own and that was a fun challenge to me.
I dont understand the reliability issue. There are no bad rotaries, just bad rotary owners. I love the Gen 1`s, currenly have 3. One has 194k, the other 170k. The third is straight race. How many V8`s do you trust much past that? A rotary takes care and attention, you have to be a good owner, dont blame the engine. I put a 89 T2 in a 85 GSL-SE, kept my weight distribution and she puts down 330hp & runs mid 11`s easily. And it still handles like a RX-7 should. Not that hard or expensive, you can get everything for under 2k.
I agree that its giving up. In my opinion the rotary is the base of the car, not the body. Rather its a RX2, RX3, RX4, RX7, RX8, or a Datsun pickup truck, its the rotary that makes it special. But what do I know

I drive an LS1 powered '93 FD. I bought it with the conversion already done.
I looked at FDs when they first came out. I couldn't afford $35K+ nor could I afford 13 mpg.
I looked at used FDs for years. They all needed rebuilt motors and still got 13 mpg.
I finally "gave up" on ever owning an FD. Then I learned about the LSx conversions.
So now I finally own an FD, it is my daily driver. I get 28 mpg, my dyno sheet says 442 RWHP, 408 RWTQ, and my timeslip reads 10.9 @127 mph in the quarter. Nothing gay about that.
Hate them all you want, LSx FDs are a blast to drive and own.
