I've seen a FD with altezas off of 290 and that ford dealership with ricey wheels and altezzas

rx7idgit 02-04-06 10:51 PM

Was planning on getting this done rather soon but for some reason my car thinks it's a bad idea or something, it keeps messing up in turn taking all my money fixing it instead of being able to play with it alittle, which one of these shops would not be to bad on labor to just go threw the car and fix things that need be fixed and get it right the first time unlike some of the shops in BCS? Though I may be over reacting, first it sounds like it keeps missing which leads me belive the timing may be off since I've changed out just about everyting that has to do with spark and what not. And also, in the turbo area of the motor, not sure what part though, after letting the car idle for about 5 mins. I notice something down there getting really hot and glowing like a hot metal red color. Any thoughts. Thanks.

DMoneyRX-7 02-04-06 11:12 PM

Well rotary performance in garland is probably really good. they have alot of experience under their belt. Gotham Racing takes forever to do the work. My friend send his motor in to get ported and rebuilt and that was about a month and a half ago.

Sideways7 02-05-06 10:03 AM

Just don't take it to Pro Tech. They screwed me over big time on a rebuild.

Turbo II-FB 02-05-06 12:57 PM

how much did they charge you?

rx7idgit 02-08-06 10:48 AM

Has anyone in the Houston area had any experience with Autologic tuning their car, that't the main people that come up in conversations up here. Just wondering.

RedBaronII 02-09-06 10:23 AM

Have you heard of Gabriel Gonzalez???!!!! :D

rx7idgit 02-09-06 11:04 AM

I actually haven't...

david88mc 02-09-06 02:01 PM

Do a search on Gabriel Gonzales screwed me over!!! It's only the longest thread ever on this site. The last time I looked I think it was 22 pages long.

Lil FD3 02-10-06 05:52 PM

Is there anywhere reputable in Houston to get work done on an FD3??? From what I've read in this and other threads, the prognosis doesn't sound good. I'm a newbie with a completely stock FD3 that I recently bought (22k original miles!). l'd like to start by replacing the pre-cat with a downpipe, and replace the cat (with a high-flow) and cat-back and put in a programmable ECU. I'd like to find someone that knows what they're doing with an FD3 and a dyno to keep me from blowing my motor.

rx7idgit 02-11-06 10:01 PM

The place that I'm using for now atleast is Maz-Max. I have my car there right now having a compresion test done cause that't one thing Brian said should be checked in relation to the problems I'm having, he said my motor might need a rebuild. The motor was only rebuilt about 30k ago but the guy that had it before me was a tard. Hopefully it's just something small though. NEone else dealt with them before and got some good/bad feedback on them.

rx7idgit 02-12-06 01:30 PM

The lack of comments on that last post is rather unreassuring, hope my cars in good hands, though any of the places that have even mild knowledge about anything rotary is better hands than mine.

david88mc 02-13-06 05:19 PM

I think your cars in pretty good hands. They have done work for several of the local Houston RX7 club members including me. I know Teamfuel has used them and you can ask Dr Killjoy (moderator for the South section) about them also. The only complaints I can imagine is that (1) they don't work with lots of aftermarket parts, they stick to stock Mazda for the most part, (2) they're not cheap, you get what you pay for though, (3) there is almost always a wait to get your car in the shop, there is no in and out service to speak of there, you're usually on a list behind several other cars. You can offset this stuff with the fact that the job will get done right the first time by a mechanic that knows what he's doing with a rotary.

David pretty much nailed it. If you want to meet a couple of the local freelance tuners come out to a club meeting, otherwise looking for shops in town that can handle aftermarket performance will be a nightmare or worse you might wind up getting :balls: by some scam-artist. Send a PM to twokrx7 and see if he can help you out. Kyle is one of the original club members from the early-mid 90s and has a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Let us know how things go.

I actually just got a call from them saying that 1) My compression is in like the low 6's(time for a rebuild or a s5 motor...opinions?) 2)My changed like a week ago spark plugs are BLACK!!! They haven't figured out why yet (It's missing really badly, probly cause of bad plugs and low compression. 3) Other small things like my rear Kaminari piece is coming off but they said they'de take care of that. This motor only lasted like 35k miles, and I only had it for like 1500 if even that. But the previous owners hardly drove it and ran regular unleaded and romped the crap out of this thing.

Rotary Performance in Garland, TX

We are in OKC and wouldn't consider having anyone else touch our FD3! Chris Ott at Rotary Performance in Garland is outstanding! Even if you have to tow it, go with a well-known pro.

rx7idgit 02-14-06 04:49 PM

I've heard he does exceptional work but is backed up until like July. I found a guy selling a motor s4, streetport, tii motor and everything for 1750 w/ 1000 miles. Gonna go ahead and do that and get this thing back on the road.

MisterMatt 02-15-06 12:33 AM

Rotary Performance did the first rebuild on my vert, and they are great, but a real diamond in the rough is Don Marvel over at Marvel Speed in Rowlett...he's an awesome guy, and he's been doing work on rotaries forever, and he used to do some R&D, so he's as experienced as they come...but you still can't go wrong with RP...for the best rebuild, come to the Dallas area

Turbo II-FB 02-15-06 09:20 AM

I might start doing work in houston for ppl for small fee's

rx7idgit 02-15-06 09:33 AM

I'm also working on finding a place to port my wastegate while I have everything out of my car, I'm thinking it'll be a good time to go ahead and get this done.

The Official Houston Mechanic Thread

Hi, I was just wondering if you guys knew of any good places to get work done on my FC in, or close to Houston? Looking to rebuild the motor, anyone know of any good places? And a estimated price on the rebuild of the motor would be nice to, with a street-port price too. Thank in advance.

RedBaronII 03-10-06 06:20 AM

Have you heard of Gabriel Gonzalez????
Do a search

Jigsaw 03-10-06 06:31 AM

Who is Gabriel Gonzalez?

Jigsaw 03-10-06 06:36 AM

Actually, on second thought, screw the street-port, I'm just looking for a straight rebuild.

[edit]

Oh and Gabriel Gonzalez can lick my balls:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...briel+Gonzalez

No way in hell I'm going to that guy.

[edit]

Oh and 2 more questions:

1.) How long does the rebuild normally (Not Mr. Gonzalez situation) take.
2.) .... damn, forgot the second one... lol.

DrKillJoY 03-10-06 07:01 AM

I don't think there is anyone in town you can really trust to do a rebuild. Maz-Max will install a reman engine in your car at a premium (but fair) price.

Other than that your pretty much dealing with people who say they know rotaries, but have nothing to back them up. There are several people in the club that are capable of doing the rebuild, getting them to spare some time and do it for you is another matter since they all have normal lives.
