TX Just moved to Dallas/Ft Worth area

Hi Everybody,
I have just moved from Mississippi to the Dallas/Ft Worth area and I have heard that there is some kind of smog tests done on cars here for the inspections. I have an 88 Rx7 which lost all it's pollution control devices long ago. Can someone tell me what they really check for.
Thanks,
Randy

First not all counties in Texas require emissions testing. The list of counties that do and some other good info regarding your yearly inspection can be found here: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/index.htm

A description of the testing methods can be found here: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc/faq/faq_asm.htm

TL;DR: You will need all the emissions devices put back on your car to legally pass the emissions component of your safety inspection.

Welcome to Texas! Tanji pretty much broke everything down for you, but if the county you're in requires you get an emission test, fear not, there are plenty of small mom and pop shops that will "test" you and ensure you pass lol.

Had my inspection done a couple of days ago. Passed emissions with no air pump, tech knew what "rotary adjustments" to do.

Wow, thanks a lot guys. My job is in Grand Prairie and they have put me up in temporary housing until I find something permanent. Now I guess I need to either decide if I want to get a commute from one of the smog free counties, or find a nice "mom and pop" shop. The nice thing I see is after your car hits 25 years old, you no longer have to get it tested for smog.
Thanks again,
Randy

I wouldn't let the smog free counties play a part in your living arrangements. You only have to have your car inspected once a year. So you should just live wherever you want and you can always find a mom and pop shop that will help you out, or might have to drive a bit farther to find one, but you'd only have to do it once a year. For instance I drive about 45 mins from my place to get my car inspected at a small shop I know. I'm sure there's plenty of other small shops around here that would do it, but I've been going to that same one for a couple years now so just figured I'd stick with them, especially since it's just once a year.
