My vote goes to Dallas/Ft. Worth. I like it because there is plenty of stuff to do, it's not as crowded and congested as Austin or Houston. It's not as pretty as San Antonio, but there's more business-type stuff and probably a bigger car scene. My favorite part about the Metroplex area is that it doesn't take long to get away from the city and there's plenty of cool stuff to do away from the Dallas Metro area! Plus, we've got tons of great rotary mechanics around here...Gotham Racing, Rotary Performance, Marvel Speed, all to name a few...\

There are also non-degreed jobs supporting the chemical and refining industries. These can be either direct or through temporary agencies like Kelly Services or CDI. Pay scales range from $7 - $50+/hr depending on education, skills and knowledge and demand.

As for specific cities. I moved from AZ to Houston in '89. Small city to very big city was a shock for me. Especially the traffic. I got accustomed to it, but after a while, I could not stand spending 1 hour in my car to get to work and another hour home. Not great for quality of life. I had the opportunity to change job locations with same employer and moved to Pearland (which is south of Houston). Much smaller town, but growing FAST and traffic there is now an issue. Relocated closer to work in '04 (10 minutes) and now have more time for family AND to work on my car. Crime in Pearland is low. Schools are top rank in Texas. Lots of restaurants. 30-45 minutes from downtown, Reliant Park, and Minute Maid Park. Clear Lake/NASA is 20 minutes away. Kemah and Galveston are also 30-60 minutes away.

What company do you work for?

What areas of Houston are nice, never been there (Texas)? Must be in the northwest area.

No but I want one. When I get some money I'll either get a 240, FC, or 240Z.

I am planning to visit some of the areas in Texas towards the end of March to get a feel for the areas, see which places are cleaner, seem less poor, etc.. I understand that all cities have their "not so fresh" areas to live in....but I want to see how nice the better areas are, what kind of condition the streets are in, the schools, etc...

I was told by a friend of ours here in Columbia that San Marcos and New Braunfels were both nice places to live....as well as up around Round Rock, north of Austin. My only problem is that I hate commuting very far, I hate small towns where anything to do is 30 minutes away....I live in one right now and it sucks. I want to get back to a population....just don't want to be near the areas of town where my family, house, cars, etc...are not safe.

How is the street scene in Texas? I know you guys supposedly have some of the faster street cars on the roads.....but for my weekend hobbies, picking fights with other cars is my kind of night.

Thanks for the input guys....please feel free to bitch and complain about certain places, praise certain places, etc....I am looking for true life, love or hate situations and feelings with these cities.

Scott
Satuday nights every weekend, everyone gets together down parmer ln. at the waterburger(in Austin of course), I currently live in Hutto, right next to Austin/ Round Rock.

They do have some aftermarket front bumpers that give it a completely different look. Check out a thread thats in the 1st gen section that is dedicated to pics of members cars. But whatever you get good luck with the modding.

Coming to Houston

I am heading down to Houston on Jan. 13, 2007 and I will be looking for some decent areas of town to possibly live, short term, and if all goes well, long term. I have never been to Houston, not sure what to expect, where to go, where not to go, etc...

I am debating accepting a position down there in the Sugarland area, but I want to check out the town first and make sure it is something I am willing to live with. If I like it, I will be looking for an apartment to get me by until my wife finds a job down here as well, and then I will begin looking for a house for the family. I was wondering if anyone in the Houston area would be available next week to meet up, show me the town, or give me some tips on where to go, where not to go, etc...Everyone I have talked to from Houston, like it there. Everyone I have talked to not from Houston, don't speak too highly of it. I am from San Diego originally, and have been living in Missouri for the past 6 years and I have had my fill of cold weather.

Well let me know if anyone can hook up sometime next week. I am coming down with a friend who is also considering moving there....he is an ex-RX7 guy, now sitting behind the wheel of a S/C Z06 (which we are getting tuned while we are there as well), but I would love to know what kind of racing scene you guys have going on down there....not much of a party, bar, alchol kind of guy...I am much more laid back, sports, poker, movies, racing, etc...

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you guys.

Carx-7 (Chris), in case you read this, we are planning to swing through Austin on our way back out because my friend wants to check it out as well....so I would love to meet up again if you are available.

Later,
Scott

Hey Scott, I made the move from Missouri (Joplin) to Houston about five years ago...and would have to say Houston is AMAZING!!! Sugar Land is beautiful and a great place to live, but expensive (as is everywhere in houston area) I am not to far from Sugar Land and kinda know that area, I think you will be pleased with what you see.

As for the race scene, coming from Missouri, you wont be disappointed. There is a really nice 1/4 drag in Bay Town (East side of Houston), they say it is the fastest in America cause it is at something like 6 feet above sea level. There is an amazing road course in Angleton (just a few minutes outside of Sugar Land) called MSR Houston. One of the guys from the houston rx club works there and lets some of us guys work the corners for him in exchange for track time. There are a number of scca and nasa events all the time, there are shows, drift events etc. all the time.

If you are going to be in town on Saturday (13th) we are having a club meeting and you can meet some of the best rx guys around. As far as the houston rx-club there are about 20-30 cars at each meeting and everyone is cool. Checkout the clubs site www.houstonrx7club.com

I will have company through monday (15th) but I could show around some on Tuesday (16th) or Thursday (18th).

If you have any questions about the area or whatever pm me and I will give you my number.

Clay

Scott,

I live inbetween Houston and Sugar Land in one of the cottage cities, close to the intersection of HW 59 south and the Beltway/tollroad 8 SW.

Since I am currently unemployed, my time is free.

PM me if you need help and I can then give you my telephone number.

Threads merged.

BTW, I'm sure your going to be busy, but the club meet is coming up this Saturday, maybe some of us can hook up with you.

BTW, I know carx-7 too! Chris was kind enough to take care of me a few years ago on my trek to Sevenstock with a broken back.

Well, I think I will miss the meet, but will be available during the week to meet up, shoot the ****, etc...We are getting the Z06 tuned at Texas Speed in Lubbock, TX on our way down...so we will be on the wrong side of Texas the first weekend. If the tracks are open in Houston, then we may take the Z06 to the track for some practice runs while we're down there. The tracks up here are closed.

Regarding the move, I will again be looking for good school districts, low crime, etc....if that means higher cost of living, oh well. I am not living in a deadbeat part of town to save money. I have heard good things about Sugarland, but there may be many other parts of Houston that are nice as well. Also, regarding traffic, where do I want to avoid during rush hours? If we move there, my wife will likely end up at the Houston Medical Plaza and I will be in Sugarland....so a good housing area that would be practical for both those locations would be a plus.

You can ring me up, I am in Houston, just shoot me a PM. I hang out with Chuck, cewrx7r1, all the time so perhaps we could get together with a few other club members.

BTW, if you can't get the Z06 sorted out before getting to Houston there are a couple of LS1 specialty shops down here that do great work including tuning S/C V8s. One of them is fabbing an exhaust for my LS1 V8 today!

Well, Texas Speed is who built his 408ci so that is why we are taking the car to them....if that doesn't work out, I believe he has been talking with some tuning place in Houston that specializes in tuning only, no mechanics....starts with a C, but I can not recall the name. But yea, I will shoot you guys some PM's when I know exactly when we will be in town and we can see about going out for dinner, going to the track, or whatever. Be nice to know some people while we are down there.

I know a good tuner in New Braunfals who has vast experience with corvettes and muscle cars. He has a dyno and all. The Spurs take their cars to him. His name is Cory and he is a really nice guy who knows what hes doing.

OK, update. We did not leave today because his tuning appointment could not be setup soon enough, so we are leaving Monday, tuning at Texas Speed on Tuesday, get into Houston Tuesday night....and hang out until Sunday when I need to get back up here. So anyone who is cool with meeting up Wed-Sat, just shoot me a pm with your cell or something and I will try and get in touch with you guys.

My cell is 573-268-3009 if anyone wants to get in touch with us while we are down there. I might have to skip Austin, since our trip is getting cut short some.....so basically, this is a Houston only trip. Anyone with kids care to chime in on the school districts? Regarding places to live, I am focusing mostly around Sugar Land. Is that a nice area of town? Low crime? How about traffic from that area?
