I'm about to buy a clean 1st Gen.... I have a question about the driving it home on expired reg...

I'm currently deployed to Iraq and I am in the process of buying a clean RX-7. Only problem is the tags are expired and they only way to really get it back home is to have my friend fly up there and drive it back. Does anybody know if he has the title saying it was just bought, if he will be okay as long as he has valid insurance on it?

The guy selling it said that we can go to the tax office in tx with the vin and get temp 30 day tags. Is this true?

Hey man!!! Yeah, I've just been lurking around the forum the past few years. Still in the rotary game though. When I'm not deployed over sea's I always own a 7 (and another mazda as the family car, a 2010 CX7)

 

Yeah you shouldn't have any problems. If for some reason he gets pulled over or whatever, the title should say that it was recently bought and there won't be an issue. If for some reason the officer is a jerk and gives a ticket for the expired tags then you have a 15 day-ish (not 100% sure on the exact number of days) grace period to go get it registered and they'll void the ticket. As far as the temp tags, when you go to register the vehicle, they will give you temp tags until the actual plates arrive (just like registering any other vehicle)
