Why single turbo?

What year RX-7 came out with a single turbo?

Is it common to change from twin turbo to single turbo? Why?

Is the earliest RX-7 with a turbo a good setup?

Does it require mods to improve performance?

For the U.S. market:

86(7?)-88: 182 HP single
89-92(1?): 200 HP single
93-95: 255 HP twin sequential

Why change from twin to single? I did it for a little more power with less stress on the engine, and greater consistency and turbo control system reliability. The stock sequential system is great when it is working properly, but on many cars it yields somewhat inconsistent performance. Conversion from twin to single is becoming more common, I think, but it isn't for everyone so I don't expect most cars to be converted. For one thing, it is rather expensive to do.

You'll have to be more specific about what you want for us to help you determine if the first RX-7 turbo is good for your goals, but it is generally a decent turbo setup (no significant flaws for a production system).

It won't improve its performance on its own, so yes you will need to mod it to get more power.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but I'm just not sure what you're asking with the last two.
