Where did everybody purchase their turbos?
Where did everybody purchase their turbos?
I'm in the market for a single(most likely the 35/40), and I want to do some shopping around. So, I was wondering if anyone could offer a few options for me to start looking. I've already looked at Aspec.
The only other question I have is, is Aspec the only place that carries the 35/40?
I'm also looking at the RX6, but not really as strongly.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You can buy the 3540 from RPM, or Horsepower in a Box. But make sure you get a delivered price, plus any tarriffs when comparing price. They will do entire kits as well. There are advantages to buying stateside with regard to customer support, but you may save on the front end with these guys. Carl Byck
cheapest place is A-spec at $3599...you could pay a little more and get a FULL set of block off plates, a jet coated manifold and downpipe if you chose..ive seen kits out there that dont even come with the oil restrictor!! not to mention the wrong downpipe gasket...a-spec has there kits with all the necessary parts
besides the Gt35/40 you should also look at the GT70R...that turbo is a beast while giving great spool up..ill have that on my car soon
good luck

I will look to get the most complete kit I can get. If i'm going to spend so much money, I think it's just smarter to spend a little more, and get it right the first time. I just cringe right now when I start to think of the money i'm going to drop. I'll be better off once I actually start moving towards my goal.
Who makes the GT70R? I'm not familiar with that one.

Three things you should consider:
1) Your current ECU choice it going to be a highly limiting factor
2) Your mechanic is going to be a limiting factor if you confuse him with being a tuner.
3) You should pick a tuner and make decisions that can be supported.
The true cost of ownership is not in the initial purchase...it's in the maintanence. Assuming you have everything setup correctly by your mechanic (you never know what can happen) then it's the tuner's role.
Get a clear idea of what your goal/destination is first. Then go find the bloke who can tune it...you might have a huge Haltech following in your area, or PFC or even MICROTECH. Then it just becomes a matter of implementation and installation.

Well, this is all new territory for me, but i'll tell you what my goals are, and what I plan to do to try to attain them. Feel free to add things, because this is truly a learning process for me.
I'm looking strongly at the 35/40. I'm aware that the purple cpu won't cut it. I was going to get the Apexi cpu. I know i'm going to have to upgrade some components of my fuel system as well. I'm going to get a Greddy front mount intercooler as well as an upgraded radiator. I'm also going to have to do the Corvette air pump thing to try to keep it as emissions friendly as I can.
Now, about my goals. I'm not trying to get crazy with power. My primary reason for going with a single, is for the health of the car. I want it to be as simple as it can be. The added power is just a bonus.
However, I'm not going to limit myself to a turbo that can't push some higher boost down the road. I want to do this once, the right way. That is why i'm looking so hard at the 35/40. I'm basically looking to run anywhere from 350 to 400rwhp for right now.
I don't think that there is too much support for any one tuner and or the RX7 in general up here, so i'm kind of out on a limb any way I go. That's why I started driving down to KD. My trust in Dave is deep and well founded. He has been the sole reason for me to be able to keep the car, as well as keep the car running. He may not be perfect, and has never claimed to be. What Dave is, is honest. That means more to me than anything else.

Sorry for getting OT guys...
Man, what is it with singers? They sing for minutes on end, spouting inane lyrics with little or no variation on the melody and to mind-numbing (often vamping) chord changes, then allot the real musicians of the group 30 seconds to show some real art. They act like... like we instrumentalists can't get a gig without them, so we really have no choice but to put up with it.
Well Jim, now that I've heard you play a bit I have to agree with Jack's description of you. Your sound is rather Breckeresque, and I don't just mean your tone. What you did over that second long vamp in Nothing is pretty reminiscent of Brecker's Impressions. My ear is far from what it used to be... Was that F... diminished, touching on some F#maj at 3:21 when it suddenly sounds written? That's pretty similar to Brecker's Eb-7 over E-7.
I don't mean to make it sound like your work's derivative. Very far from it, actually, and even if it were you'd be pulling off something most fail miserably at.
Have you got any cds out with a good deal more of you on them? I'd seriously be interested in ordering something.
In case you were wondering, I'm an... ex saxophonist. I started playing alto at age 8, taking lessons from local guru Curt Hanrahan. I stuck with him for ten years, picking up flute and clarinet in middle school and buying my own soprano and tenor in high school. I did all the local honors bands, three years of state honors jazz band, won a couple of concerto competitions with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (the Ibert as a junior and the Dahl as a senior), got a full ride to UW-Whitewater (best jazz school in the state), and then just about quit. It was always fun, but I pushed myself hard in high school, with a gig or rehearsal every night and practicing whenever I was home. I decided that I don't want to spend my professional life playing as a sideman, pretending to like the horid music I'm playing, and I definitely don't want to teach.
 So now it's been two years since my last lesson. I've had a handful of gigs for fun and written two big band charts. I still listen to jazz and legit saxophone constantly, and I play for fun periodically. I'm nowhere near what I was two years ago, but my lip isn't killing me constantly and my life isn't put on hold if I get a canker sore.
Haha, it's kind of funny. I'm pre-law at the moment. I've gone from a life of soulful expression to one completely devoid of it.
Then again, I may just pull a Joshua Redman and chicken out of law school.
Again Jim, nice chops! Lemme buy a cd!

Rick you're too funny. The popular masses don't usually care about instrumentalists. They buy vocalists. They relate with them for the simple reason that they're talking. I see it all the time. I play a lot of gigs, a lot of them with a band from Rhode Island. Now, the frontman is really good, one of the better one's that i've ever worked with. It's totally his show. I sometimes see if I can get a reaction out of the audience, and i'll purposely try to play really aggresively on a tune. I could totally kill the solo, but noone notices. It's all about the vocalist. It's just how it is. you have to play diffirent gigs to get any kind of respect as an instrumentalist.
Man, you do have a good ear. Those reharms just happen naturaly for me a lot of the time now, as I spent such a long time(as you did) through high school, and berklee, transcribing Brecker, and whatever else I could get my hands on. You aren't far off on some of what you said. I seem to spend some time in(i'll talk in the tenor sax's key) F major. The diminished thing you heard sounded to me like C# diminished. Good ear! Yes, I did go to F# major there. That was me going to the 5 chord to lead me home. None of that was written(noe of the solos on the CD were). The change up you heard was me changing the texture of the solo, to get ready to end it. It's hard to explain how I come up with those type of reharms. All I can say is that it's truly a combination of learned(practiced ideas), and a composer type of solo mentality(one thing always leading me to the next, with an exact idea of where I want to go), all being driven by my ear.
You sound like you did put your time in. Good for you. Music is more fun when you don't rely on it to make money. You're going to school for law? Awesome. You'll certainly make more money than you most likely would as a saxophone player.
It sounds to me like you could work as a musician though. Your ear alone is strong enough to get you by on a great many gigs.
I can send you a cd if you like. PM me, and we'll work out the details.
Thanks for listening man. I really wouldn't expect to get any interest on a forum like this. Thanks alot.
We'll talk soon.

60 days?!
That is absolutely unacceptable. The car industry sucks sometimes. It's so disorganized. How long can it possibly take to get something in stock?
Ughh. I feel your pain. I would be calling them every other day.

I fly for USAF and I'm gone all the time. I've emailed and was back in the states a couple of days ago and called. Still no kit in my possesion as of 6:30 ET 23 May. I ordered 21 Mar. I will fill you in all the details, but I want all the rest of things I've ordered first.

I got my single turbo from Chuck at www.rotaryextreme.com . He has been great to deal with and very upfront with everything. He has good knowledge of everything he sells and will tell you if you can get a better deal on some parts somewhere else.
