Also, there is an optimal legnth for your intake (which will vary with your setup. You may not want to run a super long pipe; better to direct the air into the intake area than run the intake way down into the 2nd oil cooler spot or something...
The optimal length for the intake before the turbo is 0! (All other things being equal of course.)
I wouldn't go without a filter. The dust and dirt that can get in can chew up your compressor blades and can wear or scratch the rotor housings. Changing the oil more frequently doesn't help with either of those.

Just get a small length of aluminum pipe, 2 silicon connectors and a k&N. That way you can move the intake closer to the front of the car.
If you drive your car everyday I wouldn't go without a filter or with the mesh. On the track that's one thing. Not sure about you but I paid alot for my single turbo and the few hp you may gain without a filter is not forth the risk of sucking in something nastey. Around me they are always doing road construction, not sure concrete dust would be to good for a turbo to ingest.

i have a k&n with my T04S (which didn't come with the kit) but i'm not sure how much i'd gain with a diff filter. Some guy told me a hks intake would be much better and allow the turbo to spool faster but then Dave at KD said that the foam filters start shreading and you don't want that stuff goin into the engine. So i'm stickin with the K&N for now. I'd love to try a strainer just once.

Run a filter. I was at RP this past week and talked to Steve Kan. He said that he loses power on his car witht a filter becasue the air comming into the turbo is too turbulent.

Many RACE cars don't have filters, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter for STREET cars. I think it makes sense to protect your compressor and engine with an air filter.
For my RX-6, I got some 90mm Santoprene hose from http://www.mcmaster.com/ to move the filter to the side of my SMIC. It works great and doesn't cost a lot. This is the same kind of hose you can use in smaller sizes to replace the intake hoses on the stock turbos. I had some hose in the car for two years and it was still in great shape when it came out (still flexible, no slits).

I have switched to the newer-style tapered A'PEXi filter element. It is smaller and easier to fit in there, and the taper opens up some space around the filter for air to flow in. Some day I'll have a box around it to reduce the amount of hot air it sucks in, but I seem to have a lot of "someday" projects like that.
