wastegates vs. BOV
A blow off valve vents excess air in the inlet between the turbo and the throttle butterflys.
It is spring loaded and also has a vacuum line attached to the plenum AFTER the throttle butterflies so when the throttle is closed and there is a vacuum behind the throttle it helps to suck the BOV diaphragm up along with the spring loaded tension pushing it up and it vents the excess air.
A wastegate vents excess exhaust gas out and around the turbo exhaust wheel keeping boost down. You can have either an internal wastegate which is a part of the exhaust housing (99% of OEM turbos have an internal wastegate) or you get the external ones such as Garrett, HKS, Trust etc etc. These are also spring loaded and work similar to a BOV. When the air pressure gets to a certain level the spring is forced open and the exhaust is vented.
Hope this helps.
