Aren't they oil pressure or air controlled?

The porche is electronic... but i feel that any electronic material close to a turbo like that is gonna smoke... lol

 

Is it based on throttle position or something? Maybe it opens more as engine load increases or something.

 

Most of the ones I've seen are oil pressure or air controlled.

looks like it could eliminate the need for wastegate and using boost controller for controlling angle of vanes seems to make some sense....just tought

 

i was thinking along those lines. but maybe the angle can't get steep enough to totally eliminate the need... it might depend on what boost pressure you're running, though.

 

That would be pretty cool to eliminate the wastegate, though I really don't see how the vanes could bypass enough exhaust to control boost. You know? From what I can tell the vanes can angle down to direct the air into the turbine wheel or lay back and let it take it's "normal" path through the housing like any other turbo would. But I don't see how it could bypass the turbine wheel all together since it would still have to leave the turbine housing in the same fashion. Does that make sense?

That proposal should be worked out soon. Where did Ernie get his T6 flanged manifold from ( IIRC it is a T6)? That written, I am also ready to test this turbo out, so if anyone is running a T6 flange that wants to test, PM me.

The vane control is via a pneumatic valve which works quite well. I also have designed a servomotor and controller for VGT turbos that I can apply. In general, VGT turbos have a larger turbine housing for a comparable sized turbo, so you normally do not need to use a wastegate. However, if you are using a smaller VGT turbo, in general, you might need to use one. The turbo in the photos will likely not need to run a wastegate since the volute area is quite large, and there is enough mass flow capacity.

In addition, the vane control can do all sorts of neat things. For example, clamp down at idle or light loads for near silent, stealthy exhaust "sound", go to full minimum opening between shifts so you maintain boost between shifts, and of course the turbo can "tune" itself automatically for the engines needs.

So could you use it to build boost while sitting still at the tree? Run the rpm's to say 6K and adjust the vanes and create a lot of boost???

What type of price range are these in??? Marco at Magnusmotorsports.com has a nice 13b manifold you can get with a T6 flange.

IIRC Ernie got his 42R kit from A-Spec tuning. I don't know if Ernie's is a T6 or not, but I do know for a fact that A-Spec can and does make T6 manifolds. And I believe most would agree with me that Sean's workmanship is some of the best you'll find. PM ZeroR for more info. Please keep us updated!! I am very curious as to what the advantages on a road course or AutoX would be with a smaller turbo taking advantage of this technology??

I made Ernie's manifold. I honestly thought about grabbing that same exact turbo I was just too far gone with my setup at that time. I'm not sure if his would work with that turbo due to turbine housing shape. Here is a manifold, and pic of the mocked up one on a car.

 

Unfortunately the max temp range of these VGT turbos is around 900 deg F.

 

they said they have tested them to over 1000*C
