Upgrade turbo on a budget

I know I bet this question has been beating many times,
but since I actually am doing a project now and have the ability to actually do my own setup just wanted to know what you people think... O its on a s4 TII engine going into the vert... I just got a question... I saw a to4e for sale for about $200 needing a rebuild good price??? so matching that up with a manifold and WG should run me about $600.. now my boy that owns www.turbospeed.com can get me a 62-1 with manifold and WG for about $900.. I might stilll be using the stock top mount intercooler depending if I could find a hood or not... as far as fuel goes I have an fpr witht he 255lph boro pump.. So based on this what do you guys suggest??? o and for exhaust Im running a 3" pipe to the side(drag style) for now untill I find out what exhaust to get

$200 for the T04E that needs a rebuild sounds nice... However, that depends how much shaft play there is, and if the housings are damaged.

What engine management are you running?

verts ecu for now.. but I just wanted something that will give me a nice flow of air w/o too much boost as I will be running the top mount unless I can find a cheap FMIC. Im not going for power right now, I just want something that will give me responce when I want it to without 2 much boost.... 8lbs is good for me...

You could put the TO4E cold side on a stock turbo until you can upgrade ECU and intercooler. It has to come apart to be rebuilt and all. I'd at the least put in some bigger secondary injectors, port the wastegate, and do everything else within your power to keep the boost down until you do the ECU.

Then instead of buying the turbo manifold and wastegate now, you can put that $ into a pile towards the ecu. You should be able to get well into the 12's with just that hybrid and fuel when all is said and done.

you can run 10-12 lbs of boost safely on the stock turbo, so just rebuild that if thats all you want, it should save you money... although I'm not sure how much a turbo rebuild for the stock turbo is so maybe someone else can post it, if not for you, then atleast for my reference

EDIT: now that I think about it I think the 10-12 boost is on the TII ECU so someone tell me for sure, as I'm no pro on the subject, just trying to help out

Well my boy quotted me 250 for the to4e rebuild leaving it brand spanking new, polishing the compressor housing and everything... I really dont want to spend money on a standalone without any mods and then having to worry about tunning it and obtaining a base map... It seems like too much trouble for the benefit... so you say 10-12 lbs on stock injectors is good??? Im gunna add an FPR just to be on the safe side...

If you install a full TO4E and no fuel mods (fpr alone does not count) you will pop your motor for sure.

I'd stay at 10 lbs of boost untill you get your injectors rebuilt or get new ones, not that they need to be bigger but they don't work as good as they get older like most things

Its an fpr with a wlbro pump... I think that should be more than enough to run at 10psi....

10 psi on a full turbo upgrade is not like 10 psi on a stock turbo. 10 psi on a T04E (60 trim) with a decient set up can yield around 300 whp, a fpr and pump WONT be enough and BOOM!.

I highly doubt that 10psi on a t04e will give you 300hp... but maybe you're right, its better to be safe than sorry... maybe ill pick up some 720 secondarys and run it with that.... I will be nowhere near 300hp with 10psi on to4e though, stock ports and no tuning what so ever, just running it with my verts puter... maybe with a standalone where I can set timing and fuel, I might see some good numbers with a minute upgrade.
