Turbonetics T72 vs Greddy T88

I need your opinion which turbo will perform better; (less lag, more power at lower boost). I presently have a ball bearing Turbonetics T72 with a P-trim .96 back. Dynoed around 450 at 20psi on C16. I'm okay with that, very mild Petit racing street port. I can get a Greddy T88-34D with the large 20cm back and 4-inch outlet. I have a full 4-inch exhaust now. I think the lag will be more with teh T88 but I like the idea of have a true 4inch outlet rather than the T72 3-inch outlet now.

Please help as the T-88 will probably be sold in a few days.

T72

cold average compressor area: 9.549 sq inches
hot average turbine area: 5.8 sq inches

hot side is only 60% of compressor and is small on an absolute basis. i can sort of see why you have a large exhaust...

T88 34D
cold compressor average area: 8.449
hot turbine area: 6.648

hot side is 79% of compressor area, a better balance and 15% larger. based on wheel areas the T88 should have less backpressure but the hot A/R comparative sizes will also be a factor.

beyond the above i have no experience w the turbos and will defer to others but thought i would post this since you are in a time sensitive situation and no other posts are up.

good luck,

hc

I have not run the turbonetics, but I have ran the greddy t88-34d with the 18cm backside and made 500whp at the 20 psi mark. IMO it was a great turbo but the power started to drop around 7300-7500 rpm if I remember correctly. I think the 20cm backside would work better for this turbo, the 18cm turbine seemed to be a bit small.

Not to call someone out I would really like a comment by the one of the following pros because I think at on time they each tried a Greddy T88-34D:

I read this post and wanted to comment but sometimes I hate debates lol but since you called me out, here goes.

I used this turbo and have it on the car now. I love this turbo and I really like the overall Greddy kit. I've made 640HP on this setup around 35psi or so. I've run 139MPH on this turbo as well. I do not like turbonetics, I have seen turbonetics turbos fail in the past (over 4 years ago) but I am not sure how they are doing now.

I think the T88 34D is a perfect street/strip turbo. At 15-20psi you will be very fast on the street and at 30psi at the track you should be in the low 10s with a stock tranny lifting as you shift. If you can drive better, you will be in the 9s. The manifold and wastegate with this kit are well made and will last a long time.

With that said I am now swapping over to the "enzo racing" kit. I have watched closely as he did SpeedNYCs car and I love the kit. With the greddy turbo the hotside is pretty small compared to newer turbos and I need a bit more power. I did like the T4 fram but I am finally swapping over to a T6 frame setup.

Ernie had a T88H and it was pretty laggy, he did not like it but I'll let him give his comments. When you ask anyone, make sure and specify that it's a T88 34D you are inquiring about. Overall I liked this turbo the best out of a few I tested. I got rid of a GT42 and went back to the T88 34D but in the end I am sticking with the kit Enzo is making. I'm probably next in line provided no one cuts the line

THank you..I'm glad to know someone is still enjoying the turbo. I want a turbo that I don't need to change for years and I think this will work. My car is street/strip but I only drive it on weekends and lag does not bother me at all. My fueling is only 850 & 1600 so I should not max it out and my tuning needs alot of work. It is a T88H-34D and its brand new. I really like the idea of having the bigger back to let the engine really flow on the road. I will try and pick it up today and post photos. I need a manifold, are you selling yours?
