Turbo Not Spinning at Idle

Alright I searched and found a few similar posts but no real clear answer.

I got a 94 FD, and basically had to resurrect this car from the grave.

I jhust finished making a new wiring harness, installed a PFC and datalogit, put in a new T04R kit, basically everything is brand new.

I'm running Valvoline VR1 20w50, its like 30-40 degrees here right now, oil was cold and thick.

I just started the car today for the first time, once i got it idling nicely at a round 900-1000rpm i got out to double check everything, found a few small oil leaks, tightened them up, no problem.

Then i noticed the turbo wasnt spinning, as soon as i revved it up a bit voom the turbo started spinning fast, it seemed once it started spinning and i let off the gas it would stay spinning. i turned the car off again, turned it back on and again it wasnt spinning.

So i had a friend watch it as i cranked it over, he said as i was cranking it the turbo spins but once i let it idle it stops spinning.

i can spin it with my fingers and every ONCE in a while theres a tad of resistance.

do i chalk this up to it being a brand new turbo and needing to set in its bearings along with the motor still needing to gain some compression? or do i riop the turbo out and return it for a new one?

to be specific its a Garrett T67.

thanks in advance!

kevin.

Kevin, for the temps we're seeing that 20w50 is probably too thick. I seem to remember telling you to run 10w30 in the motor for breakin, esp this time of year......

The turbo should definately spin at idle. Is it a genuine Garret T67 or some knock off put together by another company? Is the turbo new or used?

Rich: damn i thought you said 20w50....I'll swap it out tomorrow to 10w30, no biggie ive got tons of oils. In other news the motor seems to be awesome soo far, started and idled on the 3rd crank and then just sat at 950rpm pretty much perfectly. The motor sounds awesome and I'm glad everything went together as good as it is. Definitely be swapping to 10w30 tomorrow and well see how it goes.

Ihor: It's a Garrett T67 courtesy of ATP (atpturbo.com) im pretty sure it's genuine.

Crackheadmel: good thats inspiring.

edit: btw this is teknics/kevin, im on my friends computer right now.

alright switched it over to 10w30 just a little while ago, turbo not spinning is still worrying me but we'll see how it is after a 100 miles or so.

and the turbo is blown now, the wheel wobbles so much i can make it touch the compressor and i can move it in and out.

never boosted, primed the system before initial startup, did everything i was supposed to do and I got screwed anyway.

i hope there's some kind of warranty or something on this, i didnt plan on having to buy 2 brand new turbos for this car.

Kevin send the turbo back to them. It didn't sound right to me from the start. Don't run the car anymore as it is possible for for bearing material from the turbo to make its way into the motor. If they give you a hard time me or Rich can vouch for you.

Ihor,

Yea I havent driven the car since the massive smoke-out.

Today i removed the whole manifold/wg/turbo assembly and i also drained all the oil that was in there for fear of contamination or something. so the engines only run with the turbo being badly blown for maybe 30 minutes.

The oil smelled a little fuel-ish but im not sure, it was dark, but not black...i just figure thats normal since stuff from the build probably got washed down there and whatever.

Thanks for vouching for me, I will let you know how it goes. I feel this turbo must have been defective out of the box, but I'm awaiting the store's reply to the situation.

They know i only just got the turbo running because they forgot to include the oil feed line fitting for the turbo in the kit, so i had them ship that to me and it arrived last friday, I couldnt have ran the engine before that without an oil feed.

4 days of a running FD and it's already back apart.

BTW, kahren is going to do my final tune when this thing gets back together, we were going to set it up for 2 weeks or so from now but with this kink in the chain ill need a lot more time to break in the motor, had planned on doing some nice cruising this weekend. god dammit.

Not sure if you did, but with a new turbo I believe you are supposed to prime it to get oil in and around the bearings. This usually entails turning the car over (with the starter) but wihtout actually starting the car. When I did mine several years back I had someone hold the compressor wheel with a towel while we turned over the motor to be sure everything was properly lubed up.

I could see trashing bearings if they weren't pre oil and it started spinning.

Good luck either way though.

Were you careful to cover up the oil passages and housings when you were installing the turbo? I've blown a lot of turbos from contaminated oil passages, and normally the turbos don't last past a few hours if there is contaminated oil passages. Did the turbo come with covers on the oil inlet and outlet?

there were no covers on the inlet or outlets when i received the turbo.

They were only uncovered while installed in the car for the amount of time it took me to bolt down the feed line. I installed the drain line and fitting on the turbo before ever getting it into the car and the feed line was already run and put together before the turbo was put into the car, once i had the turbo in i flipped the line down and bolted it onto the turbo.

I also did the whole system priming thing as a precaution against any kind of problems, cranked it a couple times with the egi fuse pulled out.
