Turbo in need of a rebuild?
I just took off my non-bb Turbonetics 62-1, and I noticed it seems to have a bit more side to side shaft play than it should. It doesn't smoke and there is no axial play. I havn't measured the amount of shaft play yet, but can anyone give me some guidelines for doing so? How much would it cost to have a shop rebuild and balance it? I bought the turbo brand new, and it only has about 5k miles on it.
Do you have a wet or dry center??
I noticed on my turbo as well that it had more side play than it should, mine only has 5k miles aswell.
I pulled it off and apart, and i have a cooked rear bearing which was giving me my play. The bearing was clearly overheated by its appearance, and i always cooled my car down. Just trying to figure out if i really need a wet center or what the deal is.
Mine had no axial play, and did not smoke just as yours does
But anyway, i would pull your turbo apart and see what your shaft and bearings look like. You can buy a rebuild kit from about 80 bucks
Scribe the orientation of the comp wheel to shaft before you disassemble, that way you wouldnt need it balanced. I am building mine with a new T04r wheel so i need mine to be balanced once put together
Big or standard shaft?
Or jsut send it off and have it rebuilt/balanced.... Ill bet that would cost about 300-350, not sure at all though
