Turbo Manifold Material

I'm thinking of using 1.6mm 304 S/S for my turbo manifold. All the manifolds i've seen so far are made of steam pipe but since it doesn't come in 1 3/4' ID that i want to use i would like to use S/S. Has anyone used the thin wall S/S with success? I will be bracing the turbo the relieve weight.
Thanks Glen

I am using 1.5" sch 10 304ss pipe for my main runners and 1.25" sch 10 304ss for the wastegate tubes. The ID of 1.5" sch 10 pipe is 1.68" which is very close to the 1.75" ID you are looking for. One nice thing about the 1.5" is it forms perfectly to a standard T4 tang divided turbo flange. Another nice thing about using 1.25" sch 10 pipe for the WG runners is it fits perfect into a 46mm wastegate flange, almost like Tial made the flanges to fit that size pipe

Is there much of a price difference between 304 stainless ( cheapest available grade , usually only used for brackets in my line of work) and 316L or 321 tubing ?

the 321 and 316 are superior in strength to 304 so I don't know why people don't use it ?

The 304 pipe I'm using has a wall thickness of .125" so I'm pretty sure it will be plenty strong compared to .060 tubing you see a lot.

I would have used 321ss pipe but I coulden't find any for what I wanted to do. All the 321 I found was in tubing form and they wanted $$$ for it but maybe I was looking in the wrong places?

Here is a link to what I'm in the prosess of doing right now to my manifold. Trying to figure out how I should route my wastegate plumbing. http://www.nopistons.com/forums/inde...T&f=3&t=15642&

I'm trying to remember where we get our pipe from at work , it has the manufacturers name printed on it

We tend to use tubing (O.D sizes) for smaller hand bent stuff and pipe nominal bore for larger fabricated stuff, mostly 1" - 8" Schedule 10 or Schedule 40 for the low pressure stuff

just had a quick look for UK suppliers of pipe in 316
http://www.allstainlessltd.co.uk/products.asp

they do 1.5" 10sch 90 deg long rad elbows for about £2.48 a piece that roughly = $3.89

don't know how that compares to US prices

Your manifold is looking nice, on the wastegate runners you look to be planning to run two 1.5" pipes into one 1.5" pipe, I think it'd be better to run two smaller pipes into the 1.5" , you could run a 2 into 1 collector type arrangement then.

For a 90deg sch 10 304L butt weld fitting I payed about $4 bucks a piece if I remember right, so about the same as you get a 316 one for. The 316 was only about a buck or so more. The reason I went with the 304 over the 316 is I could find 304 plate to make the flanges with but had a hard time finding some 316. If I really felt crazy I could have made it from 321 but that means I'd have to make it out of tubing and I like the idea of making it out of pipe a lot better.

I tried the link but it didn't work for me.

try this one

Sounds like you've got it sorted , 304 should hold up fine, it's not like your running 20 Bar through them

not running 20 bar yet

But even so 290psi isn't all that much for sch 10 1.5" pipe. I'm guessing the rated working pressure on it is about 5-600psi and burst to be somewhere around 3500psi, just a rough guess though. But I'm sure when you throw the heat the rotary makes into the equation the rated pressures goes WAY down but I'll probably be ok running 20-25psi thorugh it.

Oh yeah, what is your line of work? You seem to know a bit about this stuff.

we make industrial gas turbines 6000 - 18'000 hp roughly

max static pressure for 316 1.5" NPS Sch 10s is 98.44Bar (1427PSI)

and 321 is 118.7Bar (1721.6PSI)

no data for 304

McMaster Carr is where I got my butt weld pipe fittings from. Got the straight pipe from a local steel yard for $5 a foot and the 1/2 plate for $15.

same place you listed above ,Mcmaster-Carr.
look or search"Iron and Steel Pipe Fittings and Pipe" they describe the material as "black seamless steel"
you would need the sched 40 pipe being mild steel.

kingmetals.com has mild steel pipe on the cheap. Btw, would 1.25 nominal be too restricting even for only 400rwhp? I imagine the spool would be crazy as hell on that. Tempted to make 3 manifolds to test a theory. 1.25 nom, 1.5 and 2. I was making a 2in nom cuz of the Racing beat flange, but decided against it after talking to Howard.
