Turbo hits my LIM

Well i put my turbo on just for a dry mock up and it hits my lower intake manifold , if only i could get me a spacer to put in between the turbo and exhaust manifold it would work.

does anyone see a problem in doing this, i have a gt40 and its divided...or if someone knows a shop who sells flanges

arent you running the FD SS type manifold?
dont they need a spacer between it and the motor for the turbo to clear? or cut and re-weld the manifold?
not really sure? just wondering becuase i have the same manifold i think?>

+1
FD turbo exhaust manifold will position the turbo closer to the engine.
Trying to stuff it on an FC3S 13BT will cause the turbo to hit the LIM.

You can try running an on-center turbine housing, if it's feasible, to get added clearance.

I got one for sale. .96 70bux let me know.

turbodrx7 02-22-07 12:32 PM

Racing beat makes a spacer, we used one on a friends FC with a t66 we just completed. It spaced it out just enough to clear the manifold. I will have to ask my brother where he ordered it from though.

dubulup 02-22-07 02:25 PM

^racing beat sells them. search google for the website

fastrotaries 02-22-07 03:06 PM

Racing Beat products can be found at... www.Racingbeat.com Just thought I'd point out the obvious.

No_Rotor_RX7 02-22-07 05:06 PM

yep, i've done this as well on a few different cars. on my current TII with a 70mm turbo Qtrim i have insane amounts of clearance by using a spacer between the manifold and turbo i made... instead of block to manifold. ether way works just use a gasket on both sides :)

kabooski 02-22-07 07:57 PM

theracingstore.com
in orlando has them
call them there sometimes open till 7pm

88rxn/a 02-22-07 11:11 PM

thing is:
which way is better?
between the block and manifold spacer OR
between turbo and manifold?
yeah i know, shouldnt do either......

Turblown 02-22-07 11:48 PM

Doing the spacer is a better route. If you've ever experienced an on-center turbine housing you will agree...

And yet you still see people putting a thousand bends into exhaust manifolds to get equal length LOL....

FrankV702 02-23-07 02:09 AM

Hey el nene.. I have a flange.. I think I may even have two. I used it on my old setup to put the FD manifold on the FC.. PM me

The spacer will buy you the clearance to mount the turbo...but now your turbine housing is XXmm away from your LIM.

My question is...how close is too close?

1Revvin7 - love the FD manifold in your sig!!

I had the same issue, ended up building a spacer; however I don't know how it will affect perfomance, as the car is not ready (yet :wallbash: )

Spacer has a V shape, like this / \ on my case there is 3/4 gap on the narrow section, and 1 1/2 on the wide section. I might be able to get you some pics during the weekend.

Yes, I have about 3/4 of clearance between the turbo and the manifold. I will use a turbo blanket, and will invent some sort of barrier between the hot side\DP and intake manifold.

awsome i was looking at the flange racing beat sells and i am iffy about a couple of things it seems like i might have to remove the stud bolts and put longer ones ...do i

but i will give it a try with the heat wrap on the hotside i should be ok with the heat transfer to the lim i am just afraid of it getting too hot and my fuel igniting in the lim before it even gets to my chambers

I bought a threaded flange, an a non threaded one; the manifold has a threaded flange, so basically the non threaded flange sits on top of the manifold's flange.

Don't know about the fuel igniting on the LIM (yet)

PICS theres a couple of guys that pmed me about this mod because of the same manifolds so if anybody has a pic of their set up let see it i have to get mines so when i get it i will post a pic too

id like to see som epics also,
EL Nene 7,
when you figure this out.
would you post some pics on how you did this?
i am a few months form doing this project or i would.
thanks!

RacerXtreme7 02-23-07 02:01 PM

LOL!!

vipers 02-23-07 02:20 PM

i have the fd mani as well..... all guitarjunkie28 did was cut off the turbo flange, cut a minor pie shaped section of the tubing to move the housing away from the manifold..and rewelded it back on (and also went over some of the other welds to further strengthen it).... i think having a shop do that will be far cheaper than buying the spacer..... and then it will fit w/out any spacers, which in my book, is a better way to go

RX-Heven 02-23-07 05:35 PM

Should have just bought my old setup :D
