Too Loud
I am wondering if anyone is running a single turbo on a large street ported motor with a greddy titanium exhaust (no cat) and the wastegate dumped externally. I currently have this set-up and it is outragously loud. Totally unstreetable. Tonight I got on wide open throttle for 2 seconds with a car a little ways in front of me and the man driving the car got so scared he went to pull over for a second. When I drive the car I seriously wear ear plugs. I just want to know if anyone has a similiar set up and if they are driving it on the street like that and what happened to them if they ever got pulled over. I just would like to know if anyone thinks this amount of noise is normal because people say they hear me comming from 5 blocks away. I can no longer start the car at night because neighbours say they are calling the cops and now we have to push the car down the street and start it where no houses are and drive away instantly. When we are comming home I have to turn the car off down the street and coast in. The whole time I am driving I am scared because I know if a cop is anywhere near me he is going to pull me over for sure and he is going to snap like a twig. I know any cop is just going to lose his mind on me if he hears this car. At 2 tousand rpms it is louder then any other car I have ever heard. Under wide open throttle I can not even hear myself think. I am considering selling the car because of this problem. Let me know your thoughts.

Reroute the wastegate so it dumps into your exhaust, and add a resonator to your system. It'll still be loud, but externally dumping wastegates can be stupid-loud, and with an extra muffler your car should be much tamer. Seriously, it's only about $150-300 at an exhaust shop, depending on what muffler/materials you use.

Yup.. a guy here has that issue. I cant drive next to him. For fun he WOTs next to people that **** him off when they have an open window. It actually hurts when he does that. He plumbed it down, towards the ground first...that was slightly better. Then he added a supertrap muffler like you'd see on a quad runner. It's still really loud.

I had a similar problem recently. I had the wg dumping to atmosphere and the choice of two midpipes, SR resonated (too loud, and smells) and N-Tech HF cat (too loud, but doesn't smell). I've got a big single and an old "Racing Beat" RS*R dual tip cat-back (I already did the big cannister muffler thing, got sick of it, and moved on to the dual tip). I am sure it wasn't as loud as your car, but I can definitely relate to your pull-over-paranoia and late-night-start-disturbance issues. I felt like I was certain to get pulled over if a cop ever heard the wastegate dump, and though I didn't get a ticket with this setup, I had gotten a ticket for a quieter exhaust setup in the past. It's no fun to drive the car with that fear. Plus, a street car that loud isn't cool, it's just obnoxious. Every time the WG dumped, I am sure onlookers thought my car broke.
I can't take the stink of a straight midpipe, so I decided that I must run cat. I ordered a Random 3" metallic cat and a 5x8" 14" long 3" offset/center Magnaflow muffler and had a custom midpipe made with both the cat and the muffler in it. Holy crap did this make a difference. I have been doing sound tests recently since my car was too loud, and at an 80 MPH constant speed cruise, the sound level in the car was down a full 5dB. That is a very large difference. And the sound outside the car is actually pretty mellow now. I had high hopes for this "fixing" my noise problems, but the new midpipe far exceeded my lofty expectations. I was blown away at the difference. I think power is down a little bit, but it is hard to judge since the sound level is so drastically different. My boost controller settings are about the same as my old HF cat, which felt about the same as the resonated midpipe, so maybe the difference isn't that drastic.

I don't know if you'll want to go so far as to add a cat, but I think the Magnaflow muffler in the midpipe makes a big difference in the sound. You can get large Magnaflows, and they are straight thru so they shouldn't hurt the power much (if any). It sounds like you might prefer a quieter system overall, too. Perhaps sell the GReddy Ti system (instead of chopping it up), get a Magnaflow midpipe from RX-7 Store, and get a more mild cat-back system (RB dual tip, GReddy SP, etc.).

superk,
I'm running a 4" custom exhaust with the wastegate vented into the atmosphere, its loud all the time but its only "really loud" when the wastegate is open. I'm wondering if maybe your wastegate is stuck open a little or all the way? What turbo are you running, where do you build full boost, and what size spring are you running in the wastegate?

Oh yeah, I got so carried away with the midpipe talk that I forgot to mention that I also had the wg dump plumbed back into the exhaust. Definitely do that, too. Do it first and then see how you like the sound. Since it's louder than you want at start-up and cruising, though. you'll probably want some more changes.

^ Rich is right on. I installed RX7 Store Magnaflow MP recently and it's great w/ the GReddy EVO cat-back. I don't mind the open-dump W/G. Only trouble I've had is deputy pulling me over for shootin' some good flameage, but no ticket (gotta get that under control). Harley bikers run some damn loud exhaust and cops don't seem to **** with them about it - a point I'll make should that be an issue with a cop.

i've herd his car and it does not sound like the waste gate is stuck open. the car at idle alone is very loud cuz of the exhaust and nothing to quite it down. how ever when cruising the car is extremely loud and even louder when stepping on it. i believe he's running the new apex'i turbo with the water cooled waste gate.

I'm running dual wategates vented to the atmosphere with an Rx7store resondated midpipe, and the Greddy Titanium exhaust. While I havent really boosted the car(still untuned with a barely broken in motor, and some other undresolved issues) it is less obnoxious than the stock cat and the Apexi N1.

Just go buy a couple of the biggest magnaflows that you can fit under there and put them right in front of the existing mufflers. Im sure that will quiet it down enough.
Im with zinx, I got a 4" setup with wastegate vented to atmosphere as well and while it is cop drawing attention loud its not anoying for a street car loud like you say.

in my old car stock turbo, 3 inch exhaust half bridge, i had my uncle drive it one day to work. he got home and said he would never drive it again, that it was way too loud.

Recently, I had a loud-*** HOG pull right in close behind me at a light. He and his ol' lady were getting a heavy auditory and olfactory dose of my exhaust. This sumbitch passed me, cracked his throttle, and gave me some ear-splitting exhaust that left me deef 'n dumb for a bit. At least I can give as good as I get . My car is loud only at WOT when W/G opens and I control that with my foot.
I think Superk needs to put on a quiet RB C/B. Open W/G isn't the problem - either a broken diaphragm, not enough spring, or it's plumbed incorrectly. Post photos so we can spot the problem.

i don't get why everyone is complaining about Open Wastegates....if you aren't boosting it doesn't make a diffrence.....obviously his problem is off boost and normal driving. Don't waste your money rerouting the W/G. get some extra mufflers welded inline.
