Tial 46mm questions

I'm look at getting one of these suckers but have a few questions.
1. Looking at this pic it shows one flange, roadraceengineering.com says what you see in the pic is what you get. Correct me if I'm wrong but shoulden't it come with two flanges?
2. They only sell it with the .8 bar (11.6 psi) spring. Will this spring be ok if I don't plan on going over 15psi with a boost controller? (yeah I know I say that now ...)
3. What is the difference between the "HP" and the regular becides the spring option?
4. Ever hear of any failures out there? I searched the forum and all I could find was "I've herd good things about that WG".

Thanks

-Cam

1. It doesn't come with any flanges. The flange-like thing you see in the picture is the valve seat, and should not be welded to anything. The sandwich is manifold-flange/gasket/valve-seat/wastegate on the input connection. It is dump-tube-flange/gasket/wastegate on the dump tube connection. You really also need two flanges (in addition to what is in the picture) for a fresh installation. TiAL stuff is a bargain for the quality you get, so you might look at it as a nice gesture that they don't make you buy extra flanges if you just need to replace a wastegate. Flanges and gaskets should be another $50 or so.

2. 11.6 psi is a good choice for the spring.

3. I don't know of any other differences.

4. I have never heard of anyone killing one. You'll flip when you see the quality of all the parts and how pretty they are. TiAL makes nice stuff. HKS was the other wastegate manufacturer that seemed to have a spotless reputation when I was shopping for wastegates some time ago.

Yup agree with all the above, except in that pic, the ring which is the seat is actually just sitting on the flange, the seat and the flange are seperate, they come with one flange when you buy it, the other outlet flange is not included as alot of people don't bother putting a dump tube on it, also you have the option of mild steel or stainless flange, and you can get any spring you want from about .5 bar to 2 bar, the HP model is the high pressure model , I think its at 1.3 bar they become HP, I don't have my sheet here so I can't say for sure but its something like that..
I use the 40mm tial with no problems....Max

The flange-like thing in the picture is not a flange, it is the valve seat. You should have a sandwich that goes manifold-flange / gasket / valve-seat / wastegate. You aren't supposed to weld the valve seat to anything -- it isn't a flange.

It seems there are some that are different..
I welded the flanges for a 46 mm not to long ago, and the seat was just a ring, just like they were on the 40mm..Max

I'm bringing this back from the dead. I have the 46mm and am pretty confused at this point; I've had my valve seat welded to my exhaust manifold with the bevelled-lip sticking out towards the wastegate. This doesn't seem to seal tight when bolted on.

I read the above posts saying that you need to buy a separate flange instead of welding the valve seat to the manifold, then have manifold flange -> gasket -> valve seat -> wastegate, but not entirely clear on how that would be any better as the valve seat still wouldn't sit snug on the wastegate, right? Or has mine warped as a result of welding?

You need to cut off the valve seat, weld on the flange, and get a new valve seat. I've seen valve seats welded on before and sometimes they work just fine, others they warp.

Flanges are additional, what you have there is valve set. We generally order two additional flanges with all our 46mm stock. One for manifold that sits below the valve set and the other for dump pipe. The two flanges are the same part number and are additional costs.

HP top is needed when lead based fuels are used. The hp diaphragm are slightly more expensive.

I agree TiAL make fantastic product! GReddy Trust now use TiAL for all there new line of GReddy wastegates.

wow, I'm such a noob. THis is the first time I've ever heard of a valve seat. What does it do and where does it go? I've got a tial 40mm wastegate I bought off of a forum member used so it didn't come with anything. Mayb the valve seat was already in it? I just order a tial 40mm flange to my manifold and bolted that sucker up.

can anyone help me on this? Does the valve seat actually go up inside the wastegate? What would the 40mm wastegate look like if it didn't have a valve seat at all? Any help would be great!

My 46mm is still up for sale or trade. I am wanting to run dual <40mm wastegates, and the 46mm is way overkill if I double up. It is still new and has only been fondled.

The gaskets can be found here:
