Question T78 Oil drainback installation question

Since I purchased a used and incomplete kit, I have a question about the T78's oil drainback line which as it came with the kit, was nothing more than about a 16AN rubber line. The turbo itself has a nipple coming off for the line. Is there something that's supplied with the GReddy kit that facilitates connecting the drain line to the engine block? Is it simply another nipple on the other end? The seller (who didn't own the kit) says there was a bracket or something that "might" have gone with the kit. If anyone can shed a bit of light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I would hate to get halfway through the instalation and find out I have to fabricate an attachment!

I don't have a T78 but I'll give it a stab.
The stock oil return lines connect to a pipe with a flange. The flange side goes towards the engine block.
The other end can be attached to that hose that you got with the kit. This is how it is with my GT3540 kit but I am going to fabricate a stainless steel line for it.

If you dont have the nipple that goes to the drain just cut the stock one. Leave about an inch or so to clamp to. Just hook the drain line to it. Be sure to use a large id line to get that hot oil out of there.

Ok so there is a nipple that comes with the kit to adapt to the stock drainback fitting? Vosko, the oil feed line is stainless and has all the fittings and what not. I think that's what you're referring to. Not so the oil drainback. I have the one supplied with the kit (just a standard rubber fuel/radiator type material) but I purchased a braided line as a semi-reliable substitute. Later, when I locate a good source, I'll fit all the lines with Thermotec or Aeroquip insulation which is fire proof and will provide better protection than braided. Bill, thanks again for your help.

I guess I should clarify my question a bit...

Does the stock OEM oil drainback line have a threaded fitting on the block side? If so, does anyone know the thread count/pitch/size? Is it AN or NPT? I'm sure I could acquire an adapter at Ace hardware with a nipple end if so. I'd hate to hack the end off of it :-)

Michel,

Have you looked at your car? The front oil return on the motor has two studs coming off the block for a two bolt flanged hard pipe section that is about 4" long. This pipe has a two bolt flange on the opp end. If you buy a blocking plate kit or have a blocking plate made for this flange, you can drill and tap it to fit any size npt connection up to 1/2" npt. Hope this helps.

Yeah I took a peek. I have so much stuff on the car including a CWR IC which block most of the bottom portion of the engine so I couldn't see anything without ripping the car apart. Which I don't have time to do until "maybe" next saturday. Wanted to get a jump on any potential problems I may run into. I did purchase a blocking plate kit from Carson on the forum. Not sure if that piece is included or not. Push comes to shove, I'll just buy a small piece of stock and cut it myself. Thanks for the info Kyle.

Nope, oil only. I'm in the process of designing/installing a 34 row single sided oil cooler for that very reason. Plan on running synth with this unit!

I received confirmation today that there is an adapter supplied with the GReddy kit. But as Bill stated, simply hacking off the end and clamping the hose down will work just fine. I'll get "fancy" with it down the road.

Michel,
Yes, hacking up the stock metal return looks like it should work. I have my kit at the house, so let me know if you want me to take some pics of the greddy hardware.

I maybe read this wrong but if your looking for a threaded fitting that fits on the block to hook the line to you can get them from turbonetics t3/t4 drain flange. It fits perfectly on my series 5 13bt for the drain line.

Morbius, and this fits on the engine side of things, correct? Allows for the attachment of the oil drainback hose running off the turbo to connect to the block? RX, if you have the time, a pic would be nice :-)

The hose with clamps method works, but when I had a T-78 I welded -10 AN steel male bungs to both the engine and turbo flanges. Then I put together a -10 SS braided line.

Here is what I was talking about it fits on the engine block where the drain goes in.

It uses a standard pipe thread which you can get for an AN converter and be done with it. You can order it here:

This is of course for a Series 5 and not sure about anything else. Oh and its the same bolt pattern as the drain on the bottom of a Garrett T4 just for reference.
