Single Turbo FD Transmission

I'm wondering for those of us who are putting down 350 RWHP or more how many are using the stock FD Tranny. If you are not using the stock tranny what one are you using. Has anyone destroyed their tranny along the way?

I'm asking cause I'm having problems with my tranny even after a rebuild and am wondering if I should be getting a another stock one.

Thanks,

Raven

i put down 425rwhp and my tranny is still holding up fine, it seems like the guys that are having trouble with trannies are in the very high fives to 600rwhp area...

The only guys who have problems with FD trannies are the serious drag racers and the boosted 20B guys. The FD box is actually very stout for a street car. I had my synchros cryo-treated when my tranny was rebuilt 2 years ago, but basically mine is stock and hasn't given me an ounce of problems.

If you're having issues with a fresh rebuild on the stock tranny then it is probably builder error, either labor or incorrect judgement of reusability of parts.

What kind of problems are you having? If its grinding, I'd try using some sythetic gear oil. CJ

There are two issues. One is a noise at idle when the clutch is disengaged it's sort of a clicky noise from time to time. This noise doesn't bother me at all. The problem is when I get over 140 Km/h to 160 Km/h I can hear and feel a vibration and a harmonic in the car which gets louder and more menacing the faster I go. At 180-190+ it feels like the car is going to tear itself apart. So I don't go very fast anymore. A friend of mine thinks it might actually be a driveshaft problem.

I think that is the driveshaft or meaby some problem with the rear axe or the diferencial shafts.

I don't think that the gearbox is the problem , or in case it could de a bearing.

I have abuse a lot my gearbox , an I still don't have problems

Yeah my mechanic seems to agree that it is the Driveshaft. We will try replacing that and see how it is.

The stock FD tranny is good to 600rwhp. After that the torque will start to eat 3rd gear, then the main shaft will crack.

Is this still approved in NHRA SRWD? Is this the J-spec tranny that Brian Galloway sells? If not, where do you get them and how much.

This would have to be the same box that Brian Galloway sells.

Brian is a good guy to deal with, up front, honest, and communicates very well. I would not hesitate to do business with him again. And he is FAST!

That's cool....I thought the 5th gear was the only thing different! Nice to see 3rd is beefed up too! We looked at the tranny today and it was a little rusted which is typical of Japanesse parts I have been told. But who looks under there anyways!

He prefers to be emailed at ss427bb@hotmail.com. I just put mine in and it shifts very smoothly. The lower 5th gear is very nice! And the stronger 3rd and 5th is a bonus.

Since the OP's problem is speed-related, I doubt it is the tranny. Probably the drive shaft.

My original tranny started making a weird noise after a while (112K miles, mods since 75K miles). It sounded like a bad bearing, and it made noise whenever the input shaft was spinning (i.e. it would stop making noise if you disengaged the clutch). I had used Redline MT90 in it at one point, but had since switched to Neo gear oil. I have heard in the past that Redline MTL (and MT90) can lead to bearing problems, but I have no idea if it was a contributor or just a random circumstance in my tranny.

I swapped in a used stock tranny and didn't have any trouble with the new tranny.
