Real question for real racers
Real question for real racers
Ok, I asked this about a month ago in the Brakes/Suspension forum, but nobody answered. And since all the real racers hang out here, I'll try again here.
I yanked the stock master cylinder/brake booster from my 87 turbo in preperation for taking it to the body shop. I'll have the car back soon, but don't want to put the stock stuff back in. My question is, what would I need to buy and how would I go about upgrading the master cylinder?
I was thinking of using a pair of Tilton master cylinders from TrueChoice or something, along with a proportioning valve. But I don't really have a clue how to actually do it...or if there is a better way. I assume I would need to have a bracket made that would fit the stock mounting location? And probably have a balance bar between the two master cylinders. But I'm just guessing.
Anybody with experience on this, please share.

I am just about to do this mod to my turbo II race car. I have already tried to use the Willwood tandem master cylinder, but with the stock booster it is over boosted and front lock up is hard to avoid. I am also using Willwood 6 piston Billet Superlite calipers and 13" rotors on aluminum hats from K2 racing developement. I am going to use a reverse mount 2 pedal 3 master cylinder assembly. My race car does not use the stock dash so fabricating the mount requires a couple of angle pieces from the firewall to the cage to mount the pedal assembly and replumb the brake lines. if you use a balance bar then a proportioning valve will not be needed. when I get this finished I will post this as well as some of the other mods on our web site. we are in the middle of a complete redo with many new features and sections coming in the next month or so. on a street type car with the stock dash a firewall mount pedal assembly could be used but the steering column may be in the way. the 929 master cylinder may also be used as is done in the third gens.
I found a lot of good info here http://www.wilwood.com/products/techtiplocator.html
Tim - why would you use the stock booster with that setup?
Basically my plan right now is this: Use the stock calipers, Brembo drilled/slotted rotors, dual master-cylinders with a balance bar AND a cockpit adjustable valve, all new SS line from the master-cylinder to the front calipers, hawk blue pads, stock pedal assembiles.
I thought that I could have a machine shop fab a plate to mount where the stock booster went through the firewall, and mount the master-cylinders to that. But I would probably take it somewhere to have the SS line custom made to fit. It seems to me like this would work, mount the balance bar up to the stock pedals. Do you see any problems with this setup?
