Question about wheel weight

Hey quick question about wheel weight...

How much difference will a heavier set of weels make on a 1/4 mile time. Take my car for example. A T-78 R1 that will run about 11 secs with stock rims and street tires. How much slower would it be, everythign else being the same (except the tires, obviously) with say 18in rims that weigh 30lbs each.

I've heard adding unsprung weight is like adding 4 times that amount sprung. So i guess that means going from the stock wheels (~16lbs i think) to the heavier 18's would add 56lbs of unsprung weight, or the equivalent of adding a 200lb person in the passenger seat?

Last question: Are the stock wheels adequate to street race and/or drag race on?

Thanks for any info

Many people use the stock wheels for both road racing and drag racing with great success. By the way, do you really have flip up doors? Any pictures?

The general rule of thumb is that every 100 lbs. will add about .1 seconds to your 1/4 mile time.

you really bought David Becker's car ahh....

Anyways to sort of answer you question...unless you are running slicks..I dont think you will be able to hold down the power of that T-78...that's my opinion anyways..

Yeah, bought Dave's car, and yes went ahead and got the flip up doors for the price of parts. No pics yet of the doors the parts are on the way. What size and where can i get racing slicks that will fit the stock rims. I think Dave said the rear wheels already have drag radials. Don't have the car yet, its still in CA. I think i'll probably buy some 18's for daily driving and swith out to the stock rims for racing.

Don't buy 30 lb wheels!

You can get 18" wheels that weigh anything from about 18 lbs (Volk -37 wheels) on up. I have a set of CCW wheels that are 18x10" and weigh about 20 lbs each. The "street" versions weigh 22 lbs. The 30 lb wheels will also make the ride very rough, which will be a problem with any 18" wheels already.

30lb wheels was hypothetical, i haven't decided on any yet, what kind do you have that are 20lbs. do you have 18x10 in front and rear or something smaller up front. Thanks for the info...

what kind of racing do you wanna do ? drag / autox / track.. obvoiusly drag will require different needs.. since you mentioned the 1/4 mile..I assumed drag.. might just want to throw on some M/T on the stock rears and see how they hook up...

as for autox/track... max is right.. go with something light. I'm getting some 18x10 kinesis which should weigh about 23lbs(rear) and chickening out and getting 18x9 in front.. Few people have some success with 18x10 all around.. but "most" end up running 255x35's up front anyways.. which will fit fine on a 18x9 wheel..285x35 upfront...dont think it will work

The wheel weight addition shouldnt be that bad in drag racing. Added wheel weight may cause some added stress on the axels. Larger diamater wheels will change your gear ratio and response unless you size the tire accurately but once again not drastically. The heavier wheel will might give your more inertia when shifting gears but once again it shouldnt be too noticable unless the wheel you are buying is drastically heavier. The 200 lb man theory is not exactly accurate cause the source of the power is actually the weight item. There are some matchmatics in there which I can not do. The only problems you should encounter at the strip are broken axels and maybe a tad bit slower times. (but a 50 shot of NOS will cure that) Also, you can run the Mickey thompson 26 x 10.5 on the stock FD wheel so you can switch over to those when at the track(just bring plenty axels )

Thanks
