Question about water cooling my turbo.

I just installed a new Turbonetics T61. The turbo has 2 places for water injection to help cool the turbo. I did not use them and the question is will it effect the turbo. The oil feed and return lines are hooked up to the turbo. I was told that the water cooling will help cool the turbo but it is not neccessary.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Your turbo has coolant passages in it, so it is designed for water to flow through the center housing for cooling. It isn't water injection. One port is for water in, and the other is for water out.

I don't know if you have to run water through it. Lots of turbos seem to be fine without cooling passages, but I am not sure about running a turbo that has cooling passages without running water through it. Perhaps someone who has tried that will chime in.

maxcooper...thanks for pointing the "water injection out" it was very late when I started the thread. You are correct the water is only to cool the center cartridge. I was told it didn't need to be hooked up I just want confirmation from someone who has done this.

If it's a ball bearing I have been told it will need water side plumbed up ... sleeve/foil bearings may not need the water side plumbed up.

Sum it up by saying you'll may get greater turbo life with the water cooling and you won't need to idle the car for cooldown to prevent coking of the oil.

Is there any benefit of not having them hooked up? Not that I can think of
Is there any disadvantage of not having them hooked up? Possibly (longevity / reliability)
Does it cost much to hook them up? No

Conclusion: I would hook them up
