normal oil to synthetic cause turbo to smoke / leak oil?

Hi all. I am just taking a step back and thinking things through before I most likely send my turbo out for a rebuild.

I got a T04S (60-1) from cheapturbos.com (never do anything though them they are horrid.) I have a .84 divided AR water and oil center. (non ball bearing)

It's random on and off smoke, sometimes worse, sometimes no problems. I have been chasing down smoke from my engine bay turbo area for a good couple weeks now (since I changed my oil from normal oil to royal purple), and I finally have found that the smoke is coming out of the hot side between the hot side and the center of the turbo. I tightened the bolts a little, but it didn't help much. (Still a lot of smoke coming out the back.)

I think I am going to switch back to normal oil, and add a oil restrictor to the turbo after this weekends autox event. Do you think going to synthetic can cause the issue? Also is there a chance that I can fix what ever oil seal is leaking without needing the turbo to be re-balanced and such?

Thanks
~Tweak

you wont know if you dont try it, take it off(turbo) take it apart, buy a seal kit, try to get with 360 thrust , examine closely the turbine wheel seal groove, that is usually a problem area, and try to get a stepped piston ring type seal for the groove, ask about it!
if you use the same wheels you can get away without rebalance, use some common sense on how it all works. you dont know till you try!!

I just bought some synthetic and I reallly don't think that would be the issue bro. MOBIL swears by the fact that iti s safe for all engine seals and i assume that includes seals in factory turbochargers. The seals in your turbo probably are not much different(may be poor qaulity due to the seller).

Your seal is most likely bad because it is a cheap turbo.
