I keep seeing hinges in pics. What are they for? Were are they located? Unless its something to hold the manifold while welding.....

Chocolate and HP, thanks!

As for the hinge... you're correct. They're on various fixtures and clamps that hold the manifold. Some clamp onto a straight section, others clamp onto an elbow. Its all about keeping the weld seam in the best possible position. Here's a better picture that shows the elbow clamp.

My new name... jdmfantasy has been retired! A few shots of the electro-polishing process that we now do, shown on both a T6 manifold and the new downpipe that will go on our car.

All welds removed, polished to a number 4 finish, and will be electro-polished.

Out of curiosity, what tape are you guys using for covering the openings during purging? Looks like there is some aluminum foil also which I've used in the past, but not with tape.

Thanks for the kind words!

Masking tape is used on the plugs when the area to be capped doesn't see too much heat.

Thread cleaned up for third time....I'm going to expand on this post from the first page of this thread:

Reading this thread shows you how to do it yourself. It's unbelievable that this group has shown every "secret", the build drawings and the final product. If they decide to pursue actually selling this stuff, I imagine they'll do the Group Buy route and all of the attendant rules and fees that go along with that....or it could very well be they just wanted to share a very special piece and its build history with us, and that was it.

Please. No more replies asking how much. Leave this a tech thread as it should be.

Mario III.
Simply this...this the OP's thread on this manifold. You got a problem with design, start your own thread and make a case. Do not thread crap here with "poignant" observations based on conjecture. Don't drop statements like you just caught the OP doing something they shouldn't or act like they should have known better.

STOP LOOKING THE GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH.

We'll start at one day, then it's three days, then it will be a week vacation from the website, not a permanent ban, for anyone who can't keep to the spirit of this thread and breaks the guidelines given in the quote above and the text beneath it from me.

Simple as that. Carry on, SP.

Agreed. While I disagree with the guy about the wastegatae creep, that's absolutely on topic. If you go off on some tangent and make it personal, sure, delete it. But you're just deleting on topic information. If this was just an informational thread where no one else could post, it'd make sense too. But it's not. Can ya'll stop being post ****'s? I've noticed this in like 4 different threads and I'm not even looking for it.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" fits quite nicely here.

Mate, with all due respect, I understand that you are trying to make a point, but, in my opinion if you substantiate a point by an evidence or something, I think everyone would listen to you. Casey builds outstanding manifolds and there is no doubt about that, however, if you think, his latest 3 rotor manifold will have problem with boost creep, please support it by relevan arguments and I am sure he will address that for you. The problem is when you make a random comment, and it is further unsupported.

Please take no offense to what I suggested.

Cheers
Mir

allrotor93, please make sure you start a separate thread, ok?

You can post opinions but not in this thread. This thread already has history, so it is now a minefield for anyone thinking they are going to pop in here and throw out negative thoughts when the whole purpose of this thread for the OP is to show off his crazy, hi-tech tools and the mad welding skilz he and his shop possess. Going off topic with an opinion or innuendo is no different than simply saying, "that pie cutting stuff looks like crap, man". Guess what? I'm going to delete that nonsense also. It's ALL thread crapping.

Enjoy your time off and listen to allrotor93's advice...when you get back, take it to the PM's or get a three day vacation next.

WRONG. This thread is about his latest works of art and how the shop is accomplishing them. You can ask questions all day long about fitment, finishes, why leave the pie cut welds in, etc., but questions about an operating engine or performance issues are off topic now. This thread has already tried to go down that path and failed because of the peanut gallery. Post 1 of this thread has the talk that apparently didn't sit well with some folk. Post 7 is all that's left of that nonsense that followed. All of the rest of it got deleted and the thread was then turned into strictly a "how we're building them these days, take a look" thread after page 1. It is NOT going to be anything else because too many doofuses want to chime in worthless opinions and more.

No, it was NOT on topic, the thread was hijacked. READ from post #10 and on and THAT'S what this thread is about, that's the topic. If you read, you're going to see wonderful welding and the guy is even handing out welding tips throughout the thread. That's what it's about, not the ill-conceived and poorly executed hijack attempted by siguy2k.

There's three pages of posts where everyone else "got it" but the fact is, this is just an informational thread now.

Which is why you have shared his fate. Please remember, as Ryan used to often state, RX-7 Club is not a democracy and there are no Freedom of Speech rights here. When the moderation team has to step in, LISTEN.

Carry on.

Mefarri, you're fine in my book! Now back on topic... not a stainless manifold, but always required. A little sneak peak at some set-up passes on aluminum IC tubing. This is done using 2 pulses per second with filler added. Ideally we want to eliminate any convexity to the weld bead.
I'll take a video of this process within the next few days...

And a little of the standard downpipe through various steps...

Laser-cut miters are tacked together (each piece is etched for exact orientation) with additional lengths at each end for fixturing and purge plugs. Once together its polished to a number 4 finish or slightly better.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/74953263@N07/6844899295/http://www.flickr.com/photos/74953263@N07/6844899295/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/74953263@N07/, on Flickr

Each seam is done in a single pass, starting at the side of the miter as to keep the heat away from the inside or outside radiuses, which keeps the downpipe from pulling from its intended path.

the lengths used for fixturing are removed and the V-bands are welded in place.
