In the process of doing f/pump rewire, and I also want to chance that bit of wire that goes from under the gas tank cover to the pump itself.

Question: Are these wires a special grade or wire since they constantly sit in gasoline, or can I just replace them with heavier standard wire?

You don't have to run a new wire all the way back to the pump, you just have to relocate where it is fed from and bypass a few relays. There are some really good threads on the different options. Do a quick search (fuel pump rewire) and it should answer all your other questions.
