Question Need opinion from you Single Turbo Guru's!

I'm planning on purchasing my friends heavily modified TII. The main reason I'm buying such a modded car is because he's giving me a good deal and I think he's done everything right.

The car makes 275 whp at 6500 rpm. More than enough power for me, lol, considering I'm an NA guy and this would be my first Turbo.

-So my main question is this:

Is 14 psi conservative for this kind of setup? Is this a reliable setup?

I'd have no problems with reducing the boost slightly for more reliability, if need be.

Any input would be appreciated.

-Overview of mods:

1990 engine with a street port (4000km on engine)
KKK turbo
cast exhaust manifold
720cc primaries, 1600cc secondaries,
Tial 46mm wastegate (14 psi),tial blow off valve
shane racing high fuel pump, stainless steel braided fuel lines with Earls hose ends and fittings, SX alumunium fuel pressure regulator, SX aluminum fuel filter, shane racing 9.5 lb aluminum flywheel, ACT street/strip clutch, ACT Xtreme Pressure plate, , 3" downpipe, and cone filter.

The car also has a Wolf3D programable fuel/ignition computer, front mount intercooler, custom 3" exhaust, Griffin Radiator, huge electric Vintage Air fan, GReddy Power extreme cat-back...

Car also has no emissions equipment at all.

Yeah, depending on which KKK turbo it is, I can see anywhere from 350-390 hp with those mods at 14psi.

So to answer your question... If it actually is only making 275rwhp, maybe it just hasnt' been tuned correctly, or there is another problem at hand.

What kind of dyno was that done on? I've never seen a graph like that before.
Anyway, the fact holds true, you should definitely be making more than 275hp, so something is up.

To answer your initial question, yes 14psi is reliable for a rotary. I guess it's just as reliable as 7psi or 18psi since the real factor with a rotary engine for how reliable/safe it is is that you have proper tuning. You list all the proper mods, especially the wolf3d ems - very important, so as long as it's tuned right it should be very reliable.

You also said 275hp is more than enough. If you find that the car is making much more than that, then maybe even back the boost off to 10psi or so to increase the reliable even more! Then again, after driving it with 14psi, and turning it back to 10psi for a while, it won't be long before you turn it back up

Just wondering if you or your friend has taken the car down the 1/4 mile? If you have the time for that, then I can tell you if the car is really making 275hp or if it is making a lot more, like it should be. I'm not sure where Vars ontario is, but if you can (and have the money) you can always take it to a reputable shop like Aspec or Magnus down in the Toronto area to find out what's up.

Ahh ****, I just looked at the dyno graph again. You are probably making only 275 rwhp because you backed off just short of 6000 rpm. Why is that? Your engine has a 7500 stock redline I believe, and with your mods should definitely be safe to 8000 rpm. That may be why only 275hp is the max.

THanks for you input so far KD.

What kind of dyno was that done on?
-Mustang MD-250 eddy current chassis dyno, with wideband 02. Its at Tapp Auto in Ottawa.

Just wondering if you or your friend has taken the car down the 1/4 mile?
He's taken it once, so I'm sure there's room for
improvement: 13.90.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the engine was still very new then, he didn't want to push it all the way...

But I doubt that would really make the difference between 275 and 350+ though, right?

damn 8 psi! What compressor side does he use? I'll be using a 60-1 .50 a/r compressor at 15 psi(around there)...should be a health 350 with porting...

Ya, he is boosting at 14 psi.
So its 276.4 HP @ 6500 rpm @14 lbs of boost.

The car has really only been tuned once from scratch.

Mustang dynos read 15-18 % lower than a dynojet.

If you had a wide band done I'd like to see that graph. It would shed some more light on this.
