Just recieved a T76 Garrett/ Air Research turbo but the turbine side is huge!! Read!

I've never seen a T76 in person but I bought one from a guy telling me it was rebuildable. OK, so I figured for the price it would still be cheaper than a new one even if I had to change every single part out. I got it for a good deal

Turbo came today and this sucker weighs 50lbs!! Opened the box and this snail looks like a T88. I know the compressor side is T76 but the turbine side looks massive. I thought the turbine wheel would be something like Q-trim but it's way bigger. I really don't know if this bigger exhaust is good or bad. On one side it could result in more top end. On the other hand I could experience lots of lag time. Anyways, here are the specs. Let me know what you guys think

Cold Side:

Compressor Wheel 76mm Inducer, 102mm Major

0.75 A/R Compressor Housing

5 in. Inlet and 3.5 in Outlet

Hot Side:

Big-Shaft 76 Trim Turbine Wheel 99mm major, 86mm Exducer

0.96 A/R Turbine Housing w/Tangential Scroll, 5 in. V-Band outlet

Standard Large-Frame (Thumper) inlet, bolt spacing about 4.5 in. x 2.75 in.

This is going on an 800rwhp non-rotary. I figured you guys know more about turbos

I got an email back from the guy I bought it from and he told me it is what Turbonetics calls the Thumper series turbos. Turbine housing is clamp on instead of bolted on like T76 turbos I've seen pics of. With such a big exhaust side, do you think I will hurt or gain on a 383 cubic inch engine?

This turbo will make 800 HP on a rotary. Also a Large displacement Piston.

exhaust side wheel sound similar to my buddies ht60 on his 355 camaro. There will be some lag but a lot of horsepower potential is there. If this is going to be used for drag setup you will have no problems(transbrake and 3800 stall allows him to build 20psi on the line)

I don't see to much problem with the turbo.

LAG is over-rated!

Check out this site: http://www.quartermileperformance.com and go to project cars and check out the Turbo Formula. 120,000 miles, completely stock engine with a T76 and 93 octane with Turbo Blue 109 made 570RWHP and 665rwtq @11 psi. Check out the dyno, over 300RWTQ at 2500 RPM 600RWTQ @ 3500RPM. I wouldn't be too worried about lag time Can't waited to get started on my own Turbo V8 project, going for 800RWHP as well. Too bad you put in one of those crappy unreliable V8's in your RX-7 that can handle over 100 dyno pulls most over 600RWHP on an engine with 120,000 miles all stock using pump gas and alcohol injection

Thanks, I was worried but after talking to a few more people and reading your post, I think this turbo will do pretty good with my setup

I've seen this car many times. His T76 looks so much smaller than mine. The compressor side looks to be about the same but my turbine side is way bigger. This should work better on a bigger motor pushing more exhaust
