please...do not turn this into a SMIC vs. FMIC debate. if you wanna compare the two, start a new thread. this thread is about FMICs and FMICs only.

i just wanted to clear that up before the debate started.

No where in this post does it say front mount it says which KIT would you rather have and even lists other as a choice also people have already listed M2's earlier in the thread. I don't think anyone is going to start a debate. Let vosko decide what this thread about since he was the one who started it.

vosko 12-26-01 04:09 PM

i meant front mount intercoolers. i was mainly looking at apexi and greddy and actually bought of one each..... kept the greddy since i have a greddy T78 kit :)

do you have any pics of the GReddy ICs all banged up?? ive seen the Apex cores all messed up and it does not look pretty. here is Tony Yeh's car with what looks like a damaged FMIC. he is running an Apex core.

jeez that looks horrible. hope my greddy doesn't look like that...

hey silvr94r2, you got any pics of a GReddy FMIC all messed up from daily driving??

Bacon 01-21-02 01:53 AM

did tony do some custom fitting to his? i didnt think the apex sat that far up...and when i test fitted mine it didnt sit up that far...mabe its b.c im drunk:D

his FMIC is all custom, but he used the Apex GTR core.

RotaryKnight 01-21-02 05:56 PM

Yup Tony has and Apex'i core but custom piping and end tanks. It's just the core eveything else was welded by Mike Hansen in SoCali. Also the reason why it is damaged is because he actually drives his car on the street.

I have a Greddy 2 row that I installed 2 weeks ago and everyone kept telling me you have pressure drop you will run too hot etc. Here is what I have found NO PRESSURE DROP! The car runs great. I can actually see more boost. The downside from what I understand is the install. You have to move power steering lines, A/C condensor, Radiator and mod varies other things, but the outcome is great. It also looks great

Pressure drop does not mean less boost

Pressure drop is the difference in pressure before and after the IC, not a drop in your manifold boost pressure.

If your IC has a pressure drop of 3 psi (at full boost and high RPM), your turbos have to make 15 psi to result in 12 psi showing up on your boost gauge. If your IC has a pressure drop of 1 psi, the turbos only need to make 13 psi to result in 12 psi showing up on the boost gauge. If the intake temperature is the same for both ICs, the IC with lower pressure drop will make more power on the car. The reason is that the turbos need to do less work with that setup, and thus present less of a restriction on the exhaust side. We all know that opening up the exhaust results in large power gains, and for the same reason (backpressure), an IC with lower pressure drop is desireable. You'll make more power.

With high pressure drop, the turbos have to compress the air more (higher pressure before the IC), which means the air going into the IC will be hotter. The pressure drop also moves you around the compressor map for the turbo, which might result in more or less efficient operation. But even if it is more efficient, the fact that it has to run higher pressure makes it very likely that the air will be hotter than it would be at a lower pressure (with a lower pressure drop IC), even if that puts you into a less efficient range of the compressor map.

Pressure drop is bad.

Great information! Now we just need a list of all the IC's and the corresponding pressure drop. Anybody know what the drop is on an older PFS stock mount is?

Do you have any pics of this intercooler on your car? I'm planning on getting this kit also.

PFS Intercooler Pressure Drop

To Jedon,

The pressure drop on the PFS intercooler is 1.25 psi at 10 psi boost & 6000 rpm.

Go to this link for more detail on the PFS and other intercoolers:

What do you guys think about horizontial mount intercoolers? Good? Bad? All opinions welcaome.

thanks Gun

A true front mount is superior to all the stock mount replacements out there...

I'm partial to GReddy since it's a complete kit.&nbsp Most people don't have the resources to install a front-mount IC from scratch...

Requirement for TIG welding due to welding aluminum - I would not trust aluminum that's MIG'd...

If you look for economical sources, you can get a kit build around a pre-purchased IC core for cheaper than most of these kit prices.
