Is this intercooler gonna be big enough for me?

I'm shooting for around 320whp at around 15psi in my '87 Turbo II. The turbo I'm running is a medium sized s5 hybrid. The intercooler core that I'm looking at measures 22"x7"x2.5".

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FMIC-...mZ200020604156

I realize that it's not a *huge* core, but considering I'm on the stock TMIC right now, I figure it'll be a decent upgrade. Also, I'm running the stock RAD, so the 2.5" thickness should allow a little better airflow to the RAD. Not only that, the smaller size should reduce the need to cut out a lot the front bumpers back-side.

Oh yeah, and $100? I can't complain.

If you have an FC you can get the ebay 24 x 12 x3 and it fits easily with the same compromise you need for that intercooler (removing or cutting the bumper support.
It can also be had for 100 dollars

I did go with a bigger core. My Greddy piping is 2.75" dia., so I didn't want to go any smaller than that for the core inlet and outlet. So yeah, 24x12x3 FTW. Grand total of $134.

does that size let you keep the stock bumper core?

btw, typically the smaller the turbo, a more larger the intercooler is needed. It also depends on how much boost you plan to run.

Ok the bumper core is the inner plastic bumper which is the actuall stressed part if you hit something. I cannot tell from the picture if the car has the bumper core or not.

I dunno man, the stock clutch-fan pulls a lot more air than most E-fans...

Wrong or not I prefer to call it plastic.

I am also running around with no bumper core, which is something I am not totaly comfortable with. I plan to re-create one out of tubular steel, that can fit in front of the intercooler.

That's a pretty odd thing to say...

Perhaps the reasoning is that a larger turbo is generally more efficient at higher boost/airflow? Correlating intercooler size to horsepower is probably more sensible.

Yes, I always thought the intercooler size depended on the loudness of the BOV and the color of the shift ****. Hmm.

That's a good point. For example, a 500hp NA V8 is going to need a much larger intercooler than a 400hp turbocharged 13B.

I don't remember cutting any plastics that would make your skin itch after a couple of minutes; FG on the other hand...

Guess what happened when I trimmed the bumper?

The core is installed and for the short time I drove it, it made a VERY impressive difference. Much better boost response and low-end power. Didn't take it past 5k RPM's on the trial run.
