How to tell between BB and journal?

hi..i bought a t04s turbo...i ordered a ball bearing t04s and a turbo came...how do i really know if it is fact a ball bearing?...is there anyway of checking it?...i checked the part number and it says chra for TB4137R model... ...the part number is 757197-5001...a couple friends spun the wheels and said it is not a ball bearing turbo and **** like that...but i dont think you can tell if it is ball bearing by just spinning it cuz there is no oil anyway...my brother has a ball bearing turbo that he took out and its hard to turn!...or am i wrong?...how do i tell?

Look for coolant passages. When you see an "R" at the end of a Garrett turbo it means that it's a ball bearing turbo...

BB turbos are oil and water/coolant cooled.

So are several journal bearing turbos, so this is not a good way to determine definitively.

They're oil lubricated and water cooled. I don't see how this is new news? I haven't seen a journal bearing turbo that is cooled by coolant. They're oil lubricated and oil cooled... If there's something on the market that's different I would like to learn

The stock FC turbo? I don't believe ball bearing came as an available option in the 80's

Edit: already got beat to it.

Anyways, the T04S specifically only comes as water and oil cooled if it's ball bearing if these guys are right. http://www.aptuning.net/Garrett_Turb...ull%2060-1.htm

"Garrett full 60-1 (aka T04S) Turbo with P trim wheel and T4 (Specify) A/R turbine Housing. T04S .70 compressor housing with 4" inlet and 2.5" outlet. Journal bearing unit with oil cooling only - not watercooled. Great 550HP Turbo. Garrett factory assembled and balanced."

WTF?? You can order ANY freakin Garret based turbo (that means all the clones too, ITS, Turbonetics, PHOENIX, CHEAP TURBO Etc etc etc) either water cooled or only oil lubbed. ANY turbo be it journal or BB can come water cooled. And that applies to the T04S, you can have it built with or without water cooling and with or without BB. ALL T4 based Garrett and Garrett clone ball bearing turbos are water cooled. The only non water cooled turbo you'll see is IHI I believe, but most of theres are water cooled as well.

I can order "wet" or dry CHRA's for non BB units. Have been doing it for years. I actually order almost all of them "wet" regardless unless there is a back order or time issue. Then the customer can hook them up if he so chooses or run them dry.

hehe. Actually it is high grade fi fuel line. It has two layers of blue rubber inside. I have recently put on a heat blanket on the hot side and wrapped my whole manifold and down pipe past the transmission. Has worked flawlessly. No cracks or any spots I would think twice about. I have checked it about once a month (along with my whole engine bay checkup). Thanks for caring though!

I was at the NOPI Nationals car show a couple years ago in Atlanta and a Garrett rep was there with a display demonstrating a BB cartridge vs a journal bearing. After spinning both by hand it was very obvious which one was ball bearing. It spun much easier, and it had a lot more inertia to it, so when you spun it by hand it took a lot longer to come to a stop.

I could easily tell the two apart today just by spinning the wheel by hand.

Anyone who's spun a skate board or roller skate wheel, ahummm I mean roller blade wheel, should be able to tell if it's BB or journal.

Put it on , if it spools like no other turbo and freaks you out, it's bb.
That's how I describe my to4z to people. I'll never go back- best$
I've spent. Also, the turbo spins alot longer after turning off engine.
