Arrow How do you Guys find exhaust leaks?

I installed my turbo setup, and started it up.
I get this Tick, tick, tick, and I know that it is Exhaust,But I cant for the life of me get to where it is.
You all know that the heat is intense around the engine/manifold/turbo/Downpipe flange area, and that is where I am trying to source the damn leak!
Are there any suggestions on how to go about this.without scalding my fore-arms off?
Thanks a lot Guys.Appreciate it.
STYX.

Start the car, have a friend hold a rag in the tailpipe and block off the flow and carefully feel/listen for leaks.

you can also hold a sheet of paper around the exhaust, watch it flap and sometimes catch carbon leaking from the exhaust.

it's tough with rotaries because the exhaust heats up very quickly and makes it difficult.

You can use something like a stethoscope and prob around. Listening

You could pressuize the exhaust with regulated air from an aircompressor, much like doing a leak down check of the ic pipe/intake manifold. Then feel and look for leaks, its much easier to do with compressed air then with with rotary exhaust, which is rather hot... I found some pretty serious cracks that I was not able to find with the engine running because the exhaust got too hot...

I have cracked my turbo manifold multiple times.

O and be sure the exhaust is rather clean, you don't wana blow debris back into the turbo and engine.

Why not do a boost leak, and just plug the exhaust? Kill two birds with one stone.

Then I would have to Buy Ecstasy and hire a DJ...Woohoo!
Plugging the exhaust may work.I got the RB REVII though,so I may have to think about how to go about that.(2 cans).

The ATF trick

automatic tranmission fluid. Take a vacuum hose and suck up a little amount of ATF into the engine while idling. The car will smoke like crazy and you'll easily be able to see where the leak is coming from.

I've done this a few times to source my leak.

usually having an assistant plug the exhaust while you feel around with hand or paper trick works. at work i have adapters for my evap smoke tester that works ok but the pressure smoke is emitted is not equivelant of a engine under load. i have found a slight leak at the machine sealed plate on the ht-18 before. it was a bitch to confirm without burns.

UPDATE:
Since I knew it was an exhaust leak,I had to take the whole mani/turbo off the engine.
Disconnected the Vband at the turbo/DP to see that it is leaking too.
Solution: flip the gasket over.Use a piece of exhaust gasket and duplicate another exhaust gasket.Place it between the engine and gasket, put new gasket on,old gasket on,(yep double),and replace the Turbo and Manifold.
VBAND leak: get a 3 inch Vibrant Exhaust gasket, cut the ears off it,place it between the 2 Vband mating surfaces and put the clamp back on..(They actually make a gasket for this, but they wanted like 40 bucks for gasket and shipping.I got a gasket for 4.95 locally).
Testing will update again.

Yea they do not last very long at all. Your best bet would be to lap both mating surfaces.

UPDATE:
My exhaust repair worked fairly well.
My tuner(Marco aka TheWird) was able to get the car to 12psi on the T04S before the clutch started slipping.
So..I am tuned But now need a clutch!.Story of my life!

To find those "hard to find" exhaust leaks I use a stethescope with a lenght of hard brake line stuck in the end. The small tip can probe all around and pinpoint any small leaks.

Works good for vacuum leaks and wind noise too

How'd the Vband gasket work out? Mine is leaking really bad, I am about to take a handheld belt sander to it. I love the idea of a gasket though..

I also seem to have alot of flange to block issues. I have the turbo style gasket, it's in pretty squished out looking though, anyone recommend buying a new one? Or possibly using two? Am considering using the non-turbo style one as well. Seems like it would give a bit more squish.

+my to4s causes me to slip my DFX clutch at 13 psi lol...

did you have all the flanges lapped or machined after you welded it all? may not seem like it but they warped bad when you weld em.

I had a leak sounded like it was the passenger side so suspected the downpipe. I replaced things and it turned out to be the manifold to my single turbo. Those aluminum gaskets fail It had 2 chambers replaced it still was loud. Finally after sanding flat and installing a single chamber gasket all that I could find at the time it turned quite
