Hks T51 R

Hi guys, This is my first post here. I know people on here are experts, so that's why i wanted to ask if was possible to fit an HKS T51r single turbo to a standard fd3s engine without any porting.

The reason for this is that my engine has just been rebuilt about 4000 miles ago and i really can't spend 3k for another rebuild to get the porting done.

Nearly everyone i've been speaking to in the uk said that if i fitted this turbo on a standard engine it would not spool. What do u guys think?

Any clarifications on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot...

That's a big turbo for a non-ported engine. I can't answer if it will spool, but I don't think the turbo would ever hit its efficiency range thus making it pretty pointless. Go with something like a GT35R, it would be a much better fit.

It will spool fine. Porting your engine will give you more of a power band, but you'll be fine. Do it!

Just run a big enough exhaust system and you will be just fine.

it will spool but quite late in the rev range, you might get 14 psi by 5.5k, you will lose low down grunt, what you using the car for, drag, track, or street?

Hi Blitzboy (Mark), i saw u briefly at Rotorstock on Saturday and u were talking to Ash. Didn't get a chance to speak to u as it was raining quite heavily. username on mrc is chr007.

I'll be using the car for street (weekends) and drag.

I realise that porting is needed to get full power from this turbo but not right now as my engine has just been rebuilt about 5000 miles ago and don't have the cash to do a rebuid again.

Whats the difference between the SPL and KAI? I don't understand what makes the T51R better than say a Garrett ball bearing.

The SPL is a larger turbo than the KAI, and they are both Garrett turbos but not ball bearing. They have ball bearing versions of each through. The compressor housings are unique to HKS. Its a matter of preference as too which is better.

I'd say go with something more streetable like a t04r or t04z, it has a better response then a t51r spl or kai. If your looking to make lot's of power than porting is the way to go. I'm running a street port, and planing to run the gt4088 turbo. My advice is to do more research on the turbo, and look at the turbo maps it helps alot.

Ive got a gt42 bush bearing on a non ported cosmo engine.
have made 422rwhp on dyno dynamics at 18psi(here in aus so are power figures are lower), and i havnt had a chance to add timing or lean it out much.

It comes on hard at 5500rpm and power starts to die off at 8400rpm. But then again like i said. I can make it go for longer. just have not put any timing in the top end yet.

Could you link us? I'm having problems finding it. I wouldn't mind reading up a bit more into the T51. I hear nothing but good things about this turbo. The SPL is not cheap...

Right guys, sorry for not updating about the turbo.

What can i say? The T51R is awesome, the noise it makes is unbelievable. People can hear u coming way back, sounds like a jet. It provides very good performance too, okay there's a little bit of lag because i've only got a medium street port but when it comes on u really have to hold on.
