HKS Knock monitor

Has anyone used on of these units to tune there ignition and if so how effective are they for tuning close to the edge? Does it work better than using exhaust temp?

I see you can buy a microphone that hangs in the engine bay to sense the knock, or is it better to use the Mazda factory senser that mounts in the engine block above the trailing plug.

I heard a big name shop uses the J&S system to nail down teh timing maps.

wonder how HKS compairs to J&S.

I would think a microphone just hanging in the engine bay would be worthless on a rotary.
