help!!!!! only 95hp at the wheels!!!!!

ok i took my fd to a dyno today to check whats wrong with it. I had a flat curve from 2500 rpm to 7000 rpm of about 95 hp!!! The tuner guy checked the wastegate, boost leaks and gas. everything was ok.... exept half of my gasoline was flying out from my exhaust. he thinks my timing is off. thats why im only making 4 psi. do you guys have any idea whats wrong? the turbo seems to be spooling fine( you hear a loud blow off even at 1psi) the turbo is .86 on hot side and .7 on the compressor.

if the problem is timing ,,, where do i get it fixed? can i adjust the timing on it myself?

thanx in advance

Is your car stock? You have anymore detail to when it stoped boosting and started running like crap? Was it running ok before?

It sounds like a boost problem rather than timing.

well it started running like crap last year when the twins died. im thinking even at 4psi it should be making more than 95hp? this is my second single that i had in my car. the first one was a 1.15 hot and .6 cold... i thought it was too big the first time so i switched it so a smaller hotside.

the engine is pretty much stock except for the turbo, and a straight through exhaust, a boost controller, and some other things.

the reason i think its the timing is becase the car doesnt like load.. it revs fine in neutral but when in gear it has a hesitation in the rpm. it seriously took me 9 seconds to get from 3k to 6.5k rpm.

also the engine is running rich or half of the gasoline isnt getting used.

we checked for boost leaks but there wernt any.

im out of ideas.

Have you checked your compression on your car?
Make sure you dont have a bad engine
Good Luck

bad coil, bad plugs, injector stuck open (mayby more than one of them), bad compression.

start off with the easy checks: coils, plugs, quick compression check (remember to squirt some oil in cause if an injector is stuck it will wash all of the oil off of the housing giving a bad compression reading) then lastly try the injectors.

i had the compression checked a couple of weeks ago, becuase thats the first thing i thought was wrong. i had high 6s compression and the dealership said the engine is still ok (not blown yet).

i had high 7.9s compression after the dealership squirted some oil in, but they said that squirting oil in would give a wrong reading.

o and how can injector be stuck open? ive never heard of it happening. how can you check for that?

im gonnna start checking the coils and the plugs today to see if they fire.

i have no idea how to check the injectors, can someone tell how to do that?

You have to Remove the rails but leave the injectors in place , turn on the key so that the fuel pump comes on and look for fuel squirting out of the injectors tip , there shouldn't be any once the motor is off or you're not attempting to start.

your injectors might be pumping way too much into the engine, hence the bogging and raw gas comming out of the exhaust. Who tuned it?

sounds like its running on one rotor. could be fuel, spark, or blown, but i think one rotor is just tagging along for the ride.

quick test, unplug both ignition wires on front rotor, try drive the car, is it the same as it's been doing in this 95rwhp state? if so, that rotor hasnt been working. If it is worse (won't start etc) reconnect the front and disconnect the rear, now see if its the same as 95rwhp.... if it is, thats the rotor thats not doing it's half.

and of crourse check the simple things, map sensor connected, ignition wires connected to the right places etc.

What kind of engine management are you using?

i am not using any engine managment right now because i dont have enough money for one at this moment ( i allready spent all that i had on the new turbo and the new installation.)

also if one of the rotors is taggin along, it wouldnt have good compression? both rotors have the same compression. (i dont know much about how these engines go bad, but my friend has a 94 rx7 and his rear rotor went bad and only had low 3s for the compression and 8s in the front rotor)

i dont know, im going to start checking all the things today. if i cant find anything myself i think im going to take it to the mazda dealership and let them figure it out. (hopefully they figure it out becuase the first time i took the car down (6months ago when my secondary turbo went bad), they charged me 100 dollars and found nothing wrong with the car, even though the second turbo wouldnt spool)

im still thinking its the timing because Bart Grande (the guy tuning it) said that its either the engine or the ignition. i know it cant be the engie (hopefully nothing happened to it over the two weeks when it was compression tested)

ill post the results tomorrow after im back from work.

thanx for the feedback, now at least i know where to start from.

You installed a single turbo with the stock ecu?

You want to go to a Mazda DEALER to get the car checked out?

I feel sorry for your car....

Why don't you post a full mod list so we can point out what's wrong?

So you having a guy who is not familiar with rotaries install a single turbo on your car and trouble shoot it

Don't use a stock ECU with a single turbo. If you don't have the money for at LEAST an ecu, then you don't have the money for a single turbo FD.

If you had bad experiences with Mazda in the first place, why are you going back there?!? Dealerships can hardly figure out problems with stock FD's let alone single turbo ones.

Your asking for a disaster here. If I were you, I'd sell your turbo and get a clean set of stock twins. Spend the rest of the $$ from your turbo and get your car running right (maybe just go non-sequential for ease).

I think we just found the problem with this FD. A stock ECU with a single turbo setup = BIG TROUBLE!! I can't believe that you went single without upgrading your ECU. Did you at least upgrade your fuel system?

Yes squirting in oil will bump your reading up a notch or two, but if you are dripping gas out of your exhaust, then the oil that you OMP injects into the chanber is getting washed off of the rotor houseing face, leaving you with no/low compression, its the exact same as when you flood a 7 a lot of older engines require a squirt of mmo, or 2 stroke into the things to get enough compression to start after a solid flooding.

dude if you are low on cash, you did the wrong move to put a single on an old engine without any ecu mods or fuel mods. your asking to blow it up. Put the stock **** back until you have the cash to upgrade the correct way.
