Thumbs up help bringing 2 year old FD alive

Hi everyone,

My FD went down 2 years ago due to coolant seal failure. I'm now in the process of bringing it back alive ! I need help regarding my setup, any input would be greatly appreciated. The FD will be a weekend autox and open track event car only, it will only run on 91 octane gas, I'm not interested in big power, I'm looking for a affordable and 'reliable' setup.

To avoid the hassle with a 10 year old stock twinturbo system, I want to go with a single turbo kit. Is this a good idea? So far the list is as follows, please let me know if i'm missing anything.

Already on the car:
apexi power fc
greddy intake elbow
koyo radiator
apexi bov
hks downpipe
midpipe
apexi gt spec catback
act street/strip clutch

To order:
Engine Rebuilt
Urethane Motormount
fuel pulsation damper
XS TO4E Single Turbo Kit
Fuel Injectors
Front Mount Intercooler
Denso Fuelpump
Boost Controller
powerfc retune (i'm in socal, XS seems like the only place, this is also the reason I want a xs turbo kit, they should be familiar with this turbo)

Out of the list, is there anything obvious that I'm missing?

Next I have some questions

1. Since i'm not interested in big power, rather I want reliability, and good response if possible. Is it okay to go with a stock rebuilt with no porting? Or is a street port that much better.

2. Is oem apex seal okay for this setup or should I go with better apex seals?

3. What is the typical boost of this turbo kit on 91 octane gas?

4. I noticed Greddy 2row is very cheap, around $900, is this intercooler sufficient for my needs? Or should I go with a better one.

5. For fuel injectors, is the oem 550cc and 880cc enough for my setup? or should I go with a 1300cc injector.

6. Is a adjustable fuel pressure regulator necessary for my setup? If so, should I go with a linear rate or a rising rate?

7. If I choose to install a 550cc/1300cc injector setup, is it possible or needed to service the 550cc injector which had been on the car for 120k miles. Is a cleaning/blue pring/balance service from RC Engineering sufficient?

8. Being that the car has 120k miles (california miles) should I be concerned with any fuel hose replacement?

Thank you all !!

Randy

1. Porting = More Exhaust flow = Faster spool up = quicker car.
2. Seals, Stronger seals = insurance against detonation... but nothings guaranteed...
3. ??? 14-16 psi is what most people can run on 91 but I'm sure some people run more with WI or other tricks.
4. For tracking, I'd get V-Mount but I'm biased...
5. Depends on boost and weather or not you're exceeding 85% @ 850cc
6. Dunno I have no plans on one... the stocker seems sufficient untill you put (1300cc+)1600's in there...
7. Yes, when you do FPD do the injectors they're $125-$175 or so a piece...
8. Not typically, but that depends on if you're seeing cracking and / or leaks... and if you're raising the pressure in the line...

What you haven't adressed is that with 1300's the stock pump will be somewhat inefficient... and you should concider a cosmo pump.

Talk to Jeff @ Rotary Power www.rotarypower.net or anybody whom you trust as a rotary mechanic and they'll tell you what they'd do...

1. If you care about auto-x, stick with a small streetport, otherwise you will lose even more low-end (you will already be hurting from the single turbo).
2. Just stick with OEM seals, unless your engine rebuilder says different.
3. As Dcrosby said, you probably don't want to run much more than 14-15 psi on 91 octane.
4. There will be many who disagree, but FMIC is not good for tracking the car.
5. You will need larger secondary injectors (850 bored out to 1200 or 1300).
6. You don't need to replace the OEM FPR.
7. I would most definitely get the 550s cleaned at RC.
8. Only if they need it.

Additional points:

1. As Dcrosby mentioned, you will need a fuel pump.
2. With a single turbo, you will not be able to pass smog, even semi-legitimately. If you get pulled over and your hood is popped, you could be in for a world of pain.
3. XS Engineering has a pretty bad rep from many on this board. If I were you, I would strongly consider Dave from OSDesigns or Steven Kan from Gotham Racing to tune your car.

If you go with a fuel pressure regulator you don't need the fule pulsation dampeNEr. I didn't know this before I bought all my stuff and found out after, "hey, I don't need this!"

I also agree with rynberg about the FMIC not being good for a track car...Drag, yes. Road coarse, no. I run the FMIC and notice my temps go up considerably on a hot day when I am blazing around at high rpm.

apne, you are referring to water temperature correct? What is the exact temperature you are seeing?
