Heat shield vs. CAI

I am interested in lowering the intake temps I have been seeing here in Nevada. Since my prayers for summer to end have thus far gone unanswered, my next step is to try and shield the HKS intake mounted directly to the T04r from engine heat.
My first plan is to use aluminum to make sure the filter is not breathing hot radiator/IC air.
Then I wanted to add a headlight cover intake to provide some more cool air.
Anyone try this? More importantly does anyone have pics?
I am also missing the plastic undertray that goes under the nose, is this allowing a significant amount of air to bypass the radiator?

First, the undertray is ABSOLUTELY critical on FDs, and very important on FCs. Second, make a cold air box for your intake. Last, your questions sound like you are over heating, are you measuring IAT, or are you responding to your engine running hot? Carl

The undertray on my FD was gone when I bought the car. I have since put a lot of money and work into it and it has never overheated once, or even been out of the spec temps for that matter. I am making a v-mount setup here at school for my new TO4R and will be fabbing an underbelley tray for mine.

I am just watching the IAT climbing quite a bit after heat soaking, and then not going down that much with good airflow. I am running the Cool Charge III IC and it is doing a good job (in pipe hot, out pipe Cool), but wanted some lower intake temps as seen on the PFC commander. Coolant temps get up to 98C driving up the mountains, which is hotter than I would like. I was hoping the undertray would help with this.

The undertray will definately help lower coolant temps. Make sure it is snug under the radiator and if you can, make side seals to trap the air from going around.

As for the intake temps, if your sensor is in the stock loocation, you will always see hot temps after heat soak. The sensor just keeps measuring the upper intake manifold's thermal soak. You need to reposition the sensor right after the IC. These sensors are also slow to respond to changes, but work much better in this location. Then see what your new temps look like.

Making a cold air intake will not hurt either obviously. BUt you will not see the change with the sensor in the stock location once the engine heat soaks.
