Awesome, I have a 40R project that should be finished up at the end of August when Ray Wilson at PFSupercars will be tuning it. Let us all know what kind of power it makes. Good luck

looking good bro. At what point would it be worth while to modify the stock intake manifold to a 4" tb? Has anyone ever done that?

Largest I've seen is a 90mm (3.5") on a 20B. The car has an issue surging/bucking at low RPM driving/driving around town. This can be a common problem with the rotary and a large TB. If you've ever noticed on the stock TB, the primary butterfly valve starts to open before the secondaries. There's a reason for that. I would try and keep it at ~70-80mm. If you insist on a large TB, your best bet is to go with a large ITB setup. This way you can set up the primary TB's start opening before the secondaries.

On a side note, there's really no need to upgrade to a large single TB. At most, I would enlarge each of the TB openings, and replace the butterfly valves with larger ones. You can also do some polishing work to the TB. If you take a moment out to do a search, you'll come across alot of people that have polished the TB. They typically take the bridge that seperates the 3 butterfly valves, and smooth it all out. It just helps direct the air to each of the butterfly valves with less turbulence.

I see your point and understand it. This is what I am looking at here. Our customer has a street port motor. He is bringing it to us to make him a custom ic. We are looking at something wide like 34x12x3. I have heard you want to keep the ic core thin as to keep enough flow for the radiator. We were debating running 4" piping from the tb to the ic, but if you guys are saying to stay with a smaller Tb, then looks like we will go with 3" piping and a 75mm tb. Also we will be making a full 4" exhaust system on this car. By his wishes we will also be making his a new intake manifold. I will post pics as project comes around. Any input will be appreciated

Is this on an FD? If so, a 34" x 12" x 3" won't fit. With the bumper reinforcement in place, and cutting out the front & bottom part of it, the largest I was able to fit was a 28" x 10" x 4". (overall size with endtanks) Greddy's 3 row is a TAD larger, but only by like a .5" in height. (FWIW, I chose not to go with a Greddy 3 row due to the end tanks) Trying to find a core with a 10.5" height isn't easy, so I went with a 10" core height. If you ditch the reinforcement, you should be able to fit a 12" core height.

As for the intercooler piping, I would probably keep it at ~2.75". This is also the stock intercooler piping size, which is quite large for the power the FD made stock. I spoke with bell intercoolers about intercooler piping, and they told me 2.5" intercooler piping would be fine, and 2.75" would give some room to grow, without loosing much responce time from the turbo. If this guy is looking for something like 550-600rwhp, then I'd go ahead with 3" intercooler piping. However, I don't think the GT40R will even make that kind of power on a 13B. If I remember correctly, my GT40R has something along the lines of a 2-2.5" outlet on the compressor, so keep that in mind as well.

As for the TB, again, I probably wouldn't bother upgrading the TB. I'm not sure what your exact plan is, but adding a single TB to the UIM on the FD would require a plenum. To add a plenum, you'd have to cut the UIM at the point right before the primary runners radius down. If you simply try and make an adapter plate, and bolt a TB to the factory UIM, you'll actually loose power. The air would just smack into the walls of the UIM where it bolts to the factory TB. I'd worry more about the LIM, and either fabricate one, or run the GZ LIM.

I would simply pick up a Greddy elbow, and run 2.75" intercooler piping.

I don't want to go any more off topic here, so your more than welcome to shoot me a PM about the TB and things. I have a bit of experience with machining intake manifolds for the 13B and 20B.

-Alex

Edit: Just noticed the part about the customer wanting a custom intake manifold, so forget about the whole cutting the factory UIM part and so on!

SO far we are looking at something like a T74 Q trim. He is hoping for high 600whp. We will most likely be removing the bumper support to go with the larger core. As I said once the car goes under the hammer we will have all the specifics. Also he has told us he will be bringing us a "new" style lower intake manifold that allows him to run a single fuel rail. We will be making a custom intake manifold using the stock upper.

I'm planning on customizing another uim I have and go with one single big throttle body. I'm just using the one in the pic in the mean time.

I plan on making 500-550rwhp on my 13B with my GT40R. We'll just have to wait and see. I believe it is very possible.

It's definitely possible with alot of boost, but I doubt it'd hit anymore than 550rwhp. 550rwhp+ is typically GT42R territory.

I think the GT40R can flow enough for ~700fwhp on a piston engine. So lets say 15% drivetrain loss, your at ~595rwhp. It'll make even less on a rotary, so I'd say between 500-550rwhp would be about the max.

That's cool. If that isn't enough for me, I'll be going with a GT42R or GT45R anyway.

No not yet. I'm waiting for my Dad to cut my flanges for my manifold on the laser jet @ work. Then we are making a custom manifold, and I'm using a TurboSmart 48mm wastegate.

Thats what I am shooting for on my 40r setup. I made 430 on my old stockport motor at 19psi. and not fine tuned! I hope with a good port that I now have and 25-27psi I can break 500!

**UPDATE**

Fuel system almost done. I just have to run the fuel line from the pump out to the second fuel filter, bolt the pump down, and wire it up.
