GT series on a FD, help me choose?
ive pretty much got my heart set on a twin ball bearing turbo from HKS's GT series. im not sure if i want a GT30, or GT35. im aiming for 400-500whp. also, im not a dragger, i want to take it to the track/other twisty events, so i cant have it spool up only in the high end. id like it to gimme some power starting in the late 2k's-late 3k's and have full boost by at least 4k or so. im not quite sure whats possible, or the difference in trims, ect. can any of you guys help me out in deciding whats right for me? thanks much

It sounds to me like you are looking at a GT35R, the 30 will be too small a 40R might be too big I would call A-spec they would be able to answer any of those questions they make GTseries kits for the FD.

sounds like the position im in, GT 35 or GT40? Im leaning toward the GT40, all road race all the time, Car is NOT streetable any longer. GT35 is good at gingerman and Black hawk farms, and putnam park, GT40 is better Road America. Call A SPEC like MeLoco suggested.
Thats where my kit is coming from.

well the thing is the car will be revving to 9-10k, i want max boost no later than 4.5k, and id like some boost in the 3's. i hate boost creep, dont want any of that. so i want it to spool up great with no problems keeping the pressure on at high rpms. thanks much again

that turbo runs about 2800 with the dual ball bearing option, titanium compressor wheel, inconel shaft, oil and water cooled, q-trim with a 1.00 a/r......i got a deal on it, it is a good turbo for an all around turbo with impressive power on top and decently quick spool thanks to the dual bb.......

I'm in the same boat right now. The GT 35 is the non ball bearing version, and the GT 35R is the duall bb version. They both have a choice of a 3 or 4in inlet. The BB is Oil and coolant housing, Non bb can be just oil. I believe the GT-35 only comes in one trim and A/R. And the GT-35R comes in two A/R's. I think a .96 and a 1.06. more info can be found on it at

hey, man, you won't be revving to 9-10k on a streetport.
if you are bridged and plan to go that high, then i think most of the turbos you listed will be too small. ball-bearing T66, or maybe a GT40R, or a GT42R wuld be, imhmfo, the way to go. There are kids for the GT40R available.

Well I just took the plunge and purchased a 40R BB from Sean at A-spec. Went with the .95 housing although there was a 1.05 (if I remember correctly) available as well. Everything is back-ordered from Garrett but I should have it within two weeks with tuning sessions to follow quickly. I won't have the full A-spec kit however, as it's replacing my modified GReddy T78 which features the GT40R's 88mm compressor wheel. Leaky rear seal on the turbine so I'm replacing it. I would just do a rebuild but I'll always have that "what if" in the back of my mind concerning the BB center section.
