Thumbs up Got my A-Spec AP-88 Kit today (pics)

I finally got my turbo kit (with 4" downpipe ) from A-Spec today. The kit looks very nice. I wanted to post some pics of it as I don't think there is much info about this kit out there. Basically I wanted a turbo similar to the GT40R (more top end than the GT35R). Since the GT40R is no longer available, I decided to go with this turbo. The A-Spec crew basically sold me on it after a few emails back and forth even though there is pretty much no info on this forum about the turbo that I could find. So far, the turbo looks pretty mean, but we'll have to wait until it's on the car to see what it's truly gonna do. Here are some pics, I'll update this thread once it's on the car.

Matt

DAMN!!! Very nice looking. I wasn't even aware that the GT40R wasn't offered anymore. Oops. Glad to see that they already have an alternative for it though. What kind of numbers are you shooting for?

Shooting for over 400 + rwhp with a high flow cat... Hopefully in the 415-420 rwhp range. We'll see, though .

Just painted the DP with high temp ceramic paint and will wrap it with heat wrap tomorrow.

1) Large street ported motor (done by JPR in South Jersey) with RA seals.

2) KG parts full fuel kit (1600's and 850's) with Nippondenso high flow pump.

3) SMB high flow cat (no airpump).

4) Gotham racing motor mounts.

5) A/C removed (never use it anyways).

6) Jacobs ignition.

7) All new pullies (rotary extreme).

8) R1 dual oil coolers on my touring.

9) PFC

10) M2 large SMIC

...and a bunch of other stuff, but I think that mainly covers it.

Is that SMIC even big enough for that turbo?

Me too . The turbo is in the car (https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...3&page=2&pp=15<HTTP: showthread.php?t="445723&page=2&pp=15" www.rx7club.com>), but I have not driven it. So, no performance updates as of yet, but I can comment on the fitment.

The turbo was all around a tight fit as it sits low and far back. It misses the fender wall by a very small margin (maybe 0.5 - 1 cm at most). In fact my mechanic had to loosen the motor mounts to push the engine over a little to make it fit. I don't anticipate that this will be a problem, though. Also, the wastegate tube from the manifold had to be slightly bent to fit the 4" DP (not by me, it came this way from a-spec). Because of this, it curves a little around the transmission. So... if I ever need to drop my transmission, I need to remove the exhaust manifold and turbo . Besides that, the manifold, turbo, DP and wastegate all fit great together. My mechanic promises that the car will be running by the end of this week, so I will hopefully get her back sometime early next week.

You should be able to just remove the wastegate to get the trans down. It really doesn't fit much closer to the trans than the low mount T3 35R. Those and the 40R both sit close to the fender well. Matt(?) Will be the last to receive this kit, we are replacing it with our 450R packages.

Hey Sean. Nope, the wastegate itself has little to do with it. The tip of the wastegate runner (with the v-band clamp) is bent far enough to get in the way of the tranny on it's own. It's in the way only a small amount, but it's enough to make getting the tranny off very difficult.

I would be very hard pressed to believe it sits any closer than the T3 manifolds with the older 46mm gates. However from looking at some of my old pics your's may come out further. Still no need to remove the whole assembly though. Just loosen the mani from the block and swing it out of the way the one or two millimeters you would need.

I'm not trying to lie about it, the wastegate runner is in the way of the tranny by a fair amount. Your right, I probably don't need to take off the entire mani, just loosen it. I don't think 1 or 2 mm would cut it, though. It needs about 5-10 mm. I'm not worried about it, otherwise I would have email you about it for the 1000th time . I'm gonna stop by and check out the car tomorrow, maybe I'll snap a pic of it.

Heh heh relax, I'm not saying your lying about anything, I just know the stuff I make. The older T3 46mm setup was as close as you could get. With that said I'm pretty sure yours is longer which makes it go in further at a later point down the trans. Because it sits that way I didn't think it would have made much difference being it looks further away and it's (wastegate) is physically smaller.

I can't wait to see what you think of it once the car is back on the road. Glad to see that things are going smoothly for you so far.

If I do, I'll add another one, but I think I'll be ok. What PSI were you running?

The guy that i bought my kit off of said he was running 850cc and 1600cc with my same turbo kit and he only had 1 nippondenso pump. He said he couldn't take it above 17psi because the Fuel pressure would drop from not having enough fuel so thats why i did a dual pump setup.

Your turbo is pretty big too so you might run out of fuel with just one pump.
