Going single,need some answers!

I want to go single. First I'll give you a little info on the car. It is with Brent and Don(Marvel Speed) here in Texas, they are building the motor with H.D. 3mm Apex seals and vicious street port,it already has an exhaust, but with a $3700 dollar price tag on the engine,I'm starting to consider going with a smaller single set-up to save a little dough. What is the main difference? Assume that I am completely ignorant to turbo sizes,trims,ports,etc....because I am!

Can I get 400-500 HP out of a smaller single or do I need a BIG T-78,T-88,T-51R and so on to get the BIG power. In all actuality,I'm starting to consider JUST doing some upgraded twins or something.....help please!

And also, besides injectors and a fuel pump, what else do I need?

I would go with a stand alone if money isn't an issue, but it is! Can I run a Apexi Super AFC to control fuel and a Apexi AVCR to control boost to save about $400 dollars off the price of a Power FC w/ Commander?

I'm fairly ignorant of all the little nuances involved with a single turbo as well. All I know for sure is to do it right the first time. In that respect, I don't think saving $400 on an ECU is worth it if you're already dropping so much dough. Between engine, turbo, injectors, fuel pump, etc., the last thing you want to chintz on is the brain that runs it all. Not to mention, even with just a street port, never mind the bigger turbo, you should have a programable ECU to optimize your power. Don't forget, you will also want a stronger clutch if you don't already have one. And as long as you're doing that you'll want to do the flywheel too. It never ends.....

Understand, I'm not trying to discourage you. I just don't want you blowing up your new bits and pieces. Play it safe.

Agreed,

Don't skim on the brains. Although I run a PMC. It took ALOT of partial and full dyno runs to get it running correctly. And I am still going to upgrade to a Haltec.

OOps,I left a few things out,I can see that now as you are both saying the same things. I have a Bonez Clutch w/ 6-puck ACT pressure plate and a 9lb. Mazda Speed Flywheel(I knew I was getting ahead of myself!) The engine blew about 2-3 weeks ago, powdered the Apex seals and ran them through my turbines,so you see,I HAVE TO GET a new turbo(s) anyway. I'm just trying to decide which direction to take....

And with a Haltech, all that is controled is boost, fuel and possibly ignition timing. I can effectively do that with the above metioned componenets, oops, left out Jacobs Rotary Pro Pack Ignition.

A set of upgraded or sport twins is going to cost me as much if not MORE in some cases that a single set-up. I guess I could do an Apexi PowerFC set-up,I was just thinking here and needed some feedback.More than likely it WILL come out of the shop as single, the details are sketchy though at this point! Should be wicked fast anyway you slice it though!

I just bought the AVO boost controller that Cameron from Pettit uses. Does the Haltech come with a boost control unit(built in or whatever) and if do you guys think it would be better to run the AVO with the Haltech or just use the built in one? AVO = Advanced Vehicle Operations and is made by Terry Wilson's Turbo World in Australia. It is best comparable to the HKS EZEVC, but better for rotaries.

fuel delivery and ignition timing, ie: engine management system is one area you dont want to be trying to take a cheap route on, it may seem a cheaper option initially but when due to it your engine sucks a kumara 6 months down the track it is going to seem might expensive.

if you're gonna do more than slight modding, i would NOT recommend doing little patch jobs to the ecu. If you are dumping tons-o-cash into your engine, why not buy an aftermarket ECU? sure, they can get costly, but it will most likely save you a rebuild, and it IS a good investment. Plus you get to tune it, and most of all you get PEACE OF MIND knowing that the engine you just dumped about 2 or 3 times the money that your car is worth into isn't a timebomb :P
