Garrett T04B downpipe flange

Alright so I was curious what flange this uses cuz there is no V band sticking out or anything. Looks like something tapered goes inside of it. I know people use there turbos and I'm curious how to go about making a downpipe for it... Pics would be nice

Your going to have to get a V-Band kit and have the flange welded to the turbine housng. What you have on there now is a slip joint, generally used in heavy machinery type applications and it doesn't work well on auto platforms. Do a search here for V-band kit and if you want to learn more "slip joint" would be a good search also. For a kit, search google or call around turbo shops.

i don't think garrett makes any turbos with a slip fit turbine housing. pics would help here. odds are if it is made by garrett, i have something you can use.

my garrett T04S (clearly stamped Garrett on the housing) had a slip fitting on the undivided .96 A/R hotside. you can get a vband kit from ATP turbo.

Who the hell do you think invented this (slip jointed turbine disscharge)????? You are very naive or very un-informed (wait, thats the same thing). I am truly blown away by this response lol. BTW, I was a Garrett dealer.

do you have any pics of the slip fit turbine housing? i've never seen one before. i've seen them on collectors, piping and other exhaust related parts, but never on the actual turbine housing of a turbo.

A quick search just in the single turbo section yeilded a few pics.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=slip+joint <-- You can see the slip joint and the mating downpipe and how they work. Garrett is clearly on the turbine housings. These old school slip joints like I said are meant to be used on older deseil machinery, were every thing is hard mounted and there wont be any movement between the turbine and dp, well, in a auto application its not such a good idea to used the slip joint due to leaking from engine being soft mounted not to mention the exhaust being hung by rubber.

https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo-rx-7s-23/turbo-do-i-have-767513/ <-- another example of a Garrett turbine with the slip joint. Notice the brackets for bolting in the DP.

Theres a ton more examples I'm sure if you search. ALL the old school Garrett T4 housings used to be this way. Even Turbonetics cast them the very same way. The V-Band being cast into turbines actually is a fairly new thing done to most turbines now, were back in the day it was rare to see. The weld in v-band retrofit works great though and is common. Just be sure to pre-heat both pieces (the turbine and the v-band flange) and use 100% nickle rod and let it cool slowly (of corse, TIG, not MIG, although I'm sure a really REALLY good MIG welder {the person, the not the welder} could pull it off).

well, i just learned something today. thanks. i've never seen a joint like that, although it isn't the "slip fit" connection i had in mind. that looks as though it has a seal of some sort in there as well.

i've had some luck welding v-bands to turbine housings using 309L filler. preheating the housing is a must, but the v-band is so small, it heats up after a couple tacks.
