Ford Diesel Turbos

There are a couple of sweet looking Garrett turbos on ebay for a good price but I can't find any more info than that it's a T04E. Anybody know anything more about these turbos like A/R etc?

Is there any reason that you wouldn't want this turbo on A RX-7? Is it the same TO4E that you would get from some aftermarket shop?

you'll just need to check the exhuast housing A/R size. everything else is all fine and dandy for the rx7

mako 01-07-02 11:44 PM

a friend of mine bought one of these turbos. its pretty nice for the money. the a/r's were a .70 compressor and 1.00 on the exhaust turbine. with a p trim wheel. we took it to a local turbo shop and this one was the smaller t04e ford has a bigger one that has a bigger compressor wheel. but that one has like a 1.25 on the exhaust side.

cool i wonde how much ford directly charges

Jedon 01-08-02 12:34 AM

Well damn a .7 comp 1.0 A/R P-trim divided for $375 or so sounds great!

50tooslow 01-08-02 09:29 AM

So are you saying that if you can get a turbo off of a power stroke ford truck it would work with no modifications, or few modifications? Just curious because I have just started looking for a single, not real sure what i want, but something in the to4e to apexi ballbearing range.

Greg 01-08-02 09:34 AM

A turbo is a turbo. As long as the specs meet your requirements then go ahead and get it. Its sounds like a deal to me.

InitialD FC 01-08-02 11:50 AM

If that is the bigger one (which is looks like it is) as Mako said the exhaust housing is huge, but its 1.32, not 1.25!!! But you really dont want to get it... Trust me...

Its a 57trim compressor wheel, it maxes out at just over 400hp... We ran one and would loose 5psi by redline. Dropped from 15 to 10!!! The compressor wheel cant flow the power for that size turbo for our motor. :(

crispeed 01-08-02 01:07 PM

The newer Ford Diesels run a much bigger turbo than the one above. They have internal wasgates too. Plus they spin backawards(anti clockwise) from coventional ones!

I have a Powerstroke and have asked these same questions to no avail. The turbo is a TP-38. Mine has a 1.15A/R turbine and a 1.1A/R compressor. I believe the newer ones actually have a smaller turbine housing and a built in wastegate. Mine is non wastegated and puts about 20PSI to a 444 cu in. engine at around 2700 RPM so you can kinda know what the airflow is. Oh, and the powerstroke is a 7.3L not 7.8... so I'm kinda wary about what they know about their product.

I can't find reference to the Garret part number anywhere on the net, can we call Garret and ask them? Somebody must know for sure given a part number.

peejay 01-09-02 09:56 PM

Loses pressure to 10psi at redline... hey perfect, no need for expensive wastegates and lots of midrange grunt :)

If you think $375 for a turbo is cheap, check out the intercoolers.... a P/S itercooler MIGHT fit under the hood of an FC if you took the engine out first and they only cost $200... now imagine buying one, cutting it in half, fabbing new end tanks, and selling one of the intercoolers for "only" $400 to a bud and keeping the other one for yourself!

richjackson7 01-09-02 11:28 PM

the intercooler from a 92 isuzu npr truck fits great BTw whats the flow rating on one of those.

Gearhead 01-10-02 12:17 AM

Initial D, you must've gotten a different one. The specs on mine are different than that. Did you ever find any good info on those turbos? I could never find flow maps or anything. I have always liked to find wierd things like those to put on my RX7 cuz I used to be broke a$$. I am going to get a Freightliner intercooler and cut it and TIG the tanks for my next project. I know that some of these custom products offer some advantage... but I don't think all of them are worth that much more $$.

Gearhead, what year is your powerstroke? It seems your turbo's A/Rs are fine. is there a part number other than tp-38?

Gearhead 01-20-02 12:13 PM

Ok. The turbo at the top of this page must be a Ford turbo from the Navistar (International) 466 or something. My '97 powerstroke has a A/R1.1 comp. and 1.15 turb. The part # is a 1825818C91. I don't know if that's Ford, Navistar, or Garrett (Allied Research). I'll try to find a pic to post 4 you guys. I just assumed that when someone is selling a Ford diesel turbo that it's a powerstroke. Because big rigs built by Ford are branded Sterling. Maybe it's an older Ford rig turbo. Mine also has a band clamp on the turbine. If I find one... I'm gonna buy it and try it.

Definitely not a Ford part number.. Ford part numbers are always a combination of letters and numbers that are like 4-4-4 and sometimes there's an -A or -B suffix. The first 4-digit "syllable" describes the year and model, so a part DESIGNED IN '97 would start with F7xx- etc. An E8HZ part number means it was first used in '88, and the Z means it's an "aftermarket" part - meaning it's a Ford Service part instead of one for a specific vehicle. At any rate it's HIGHLY unlikely that it's the same turbo as on your '97 Powerstroke. Like you said it's most likely from an industrial engine, I think Ford did make a 477cid industrial Diesel which would be 7.8 liters.

Yeah lets just push the compressor to it's thermal limits, what a great idea!

magnus 01-21-02 09:44 AM

Initial D is right they are not enough compressor for rx-7's we had one on our car for testing, all our other turbo's were getting rebuilt, best we could get was 11.4, on 1.4 60' not good enough, 300hp is about it.

Gearhead 01-22-02 10:30 AM

I guess that whole counter clockwise thing would make it a little hard to get a different compressor wheel and housing. It's odd that it can only support 300HP on an RX7. I know of Powerstrokes making 400 HP with these turbos and about 800LB ft. I know it's different engines and fuels... The most common turbo upgrade on a powerstroke is a SMALLER exhaust housing to help it spool.
If the turbo that started this thread is different... actually a T04E then It could be a good deal. How would one go about finding more info on these?
Don.

Gearhead 12-24-02 01:50 PM

Ok. I'm gonna try it. I found a Powerstroke turbo off of a '01 for $150 with the pedestal. I can sell the pedestal to someone... or if it won't work, I'll just put the turbo on my truck. Hell, it's quite a bit bigger than the turbo on my TII anyway. Surely it'll flow a little more. Any more info on this?
Don.

I have that turbo thats in the picture in the first post, I made 365 rwhp at 17 psi on a S4 motor..Max
