FD Single Turbos - Are They The Wave Of The Future??

There seems lately to be a strong interest in single turbo conversions for FDs. There have been many people converting and many planning or are considering it. I'd like to know from the people that have already converted what their honest opinions are on this major decision. I think it would help all of us that are doing it or considering doing this. I'm looking for honest posts of the "good, the bad and the ugly".

I think this conversion is not just for the racers (drag and road).

There arn't may down sides to going single. The best "all around single would be the Apexi. It will net more power than the stock twins with about the same spool up. When going single you eliminate so many headaches with the car than with the stock twins, such as all the vacume lines, selanoid rack, and so much less heat from the engine bay, as well as less stress on the engine. Also, once your single its very very easy to work on the car. A basic mechanic would be able to work on it. ( Not saying do this), but it really simplifies things.

only negative is the $3000 you need to pay for the kit, extra $$ for other parts, and finally pay someone more $$ to install it unless you can do it in your backyard.

Besides that, not much negative.s. but i see 6000-7000 negatives $$ bills

Biggest negative IMO is they can't pass smog without cheating. Especially here in CA, but I haven't heard of anyone with a single that just goes and smogs it at the local gas station. They all have, ahem, a *special* place they take it or something like that...

i went single to eliminate lots of little nagging issues, the main is too small of a wastegate on the stock turbos even ported still creeps. i won't have to worry about overboosting too much with a 50mm hks racing wastegate on my xs t04s. if you have the money go for a single. its going to be nice to have the same amount of boost each time i hit the gas the stock twins are great to a point and can be made to handle high horsepower but its not worth all the troubles. i have also heard with a single turbo the car feel less strained because a larger single turbo is more efficient in making power. smog isn't much of an issue to most people there will ALWAYS be a way to get around it.
