FD Single Turbo Questions

I'm planning on switching from twin to single turbo (TO4), but have a few questions.

1. Is there anyone with a single turbo setup on an FD that's running on stock ports? The previous owner only drove it 6k miles on a brand new stock motor before it was sold to me. Pulling the motor to port it is not an option.
I'm wondering how much the stock ports hold back the potential power with a single setup, and how much power people are putting down. Some people tell me I should stick with my twin setup if I'm running stock ports because going single wouldn't be much of a difference unless I get the motor ported. Can someone shed some light on this?

2. What injectors are you running?

3. What engine management are you using? Will the Power FC be sufficient?

Thanks

Do yourself a favor and search, ErnieT if I remember correctly is making gobs of power on a stock reman.
The injector size you need is all dependent on what you plan to push the car to. The common combinations when upgrading would be: putting the stock 850's in the primary and putting 1600's in the secondary, putting 850's in the primary and 1300's in the secondaries, or leave the primaries stock and put 1600's in the secondaries, again it's all dependent on your fuel needs.
Microtech, PowerFC, and Haltech are all popular Management systems.

Anyway, I appreciate your input. Anyone out there have more information? Dyno? Experiences with a single setup on stock ports?

Thank you

Another question. I purchased the OBX style manifold. This requires removal of the air pump. We have emission laws here in CT and was wondering what people do to pass if the airpump is eliminated.

Thanks

I've got the 35R from A-Spec. I'm on stock ports and running a PFC on 850/1600s. I'm only running 15 psi right now, probably hitting around 350, but I haven't dyno'd it yet. There's definitely a difference, albeit not a huge one. Power delivery is smooth and pulls all the way to redline. As far as power potential with stock ports, I haven't driven a similar setup with a ported motor but it will give higher gains when you do. You may loose some low end power, but you make up for it up top.

I was running about 15 on the twins before I moved over. You can tell the difference, but I also did an FMIC, changed the CB, pulled the PS and A/C among other things. I can't speak for everyone about the upside of going single, but I'm very happy.

You're not going to pass emissions without the air pump, well at least not visually. You may be able to pass the smog test, but it would take a lot of work. The OBX manifold is junk, get a different one otherwise you're going to have to modify to keep it from cracking. Go with whatever ECU your tuner recommends.

You will notice a difference between twins and single. First the twins are not going to be as eff. as the single will ie. more heat AIT's, on stock ports 15lbs 550' 1300's would be fine. Find the EMS your local tuner is most comfortable with this will go along way in assuring a good tune.

Are there any manifolds designed so that the airpump will not have to be eliminated?

a stock reman will hold up fine to a single turbo. I had a t78 on my stock motor and made 402 rwhp. I ran the power fc too.

you can mantain the stock air pump with the obx manifold if you use a turbo with a pretty small compressor housing. I've mounted a t04B with a .6 comp AR on an OBX manny with the air pump still on there. I just had to shave the air pump bracket a hair.

Thanks, wide. Would you happen to have any pics?

man I really meant to take pictures but never got around to doing it. It is pretty easy to do though...just try to bolt the turbo to the manifold...it will almost bolt on but that air pump bracket will just be a tiny bit in the way...I just used a grinder and shaved off a mm or 2. This was a test fit with no t4 gasket, so if I had a gasket on there it may even fit w/o any shaving. I use 2 gaskets as a spacer on my turbo setup...that would almost certainly let you install that .6 comp side turbo w/o shaving.
